Bradford Council urges local people to consider becoming a foster carer for local children this Foster Care Fortnight

TO mark this year's Foster Care Fortnight, Bradford Fostering, part of Bradford Metropolitan District Council, is encouraging people in the area to make a positive lasting difference to children and young people by becoming a foster carer. Foster Care Fortnight runs until 23 May 2021 and is the UK's largest foster care awareness raising campaign showcasing the positive lasting impact foster care makes on children and young people's lives. This year the focus is on encouraging everyone who cares about the lives of children and young people to share:- '#WhyWeCare' by taking action and fostering for their Local Authority. It is estimated that around 1,180 foster families are needed in the Yorkshire and Humber Region to support children and young people on a full and part time basis.

Mark Douglas, Strategic Director Children's Services, said:- "Every child deserves to have a safe, secure, and stable environment to be happy, healthy and achieve their full potential in life and our amazing foster carers make this happen by generously sharing their time, lives, and homes with children and young people whose own families can't look after them. But we urgently need more foster carers for the children and young people in our care, on both a short term and long term basis, so we urge anyone who cares to get in touch through our new website and find out how they can become part of our incredible fostering community."

Every foster carer registered with Bradford Fostering earns an average of ₤561 per week with generous allowances and tax breaks, receives extensive training, and has access to round the clock professional advice and guidance. There is also a vibrant, supportive community of foster carers on hand to share experiences and give support.

Kal and Ash, foster carers with Bradford Fostering, said:- "Fostering is the best job you can have, but it is so much more than a job, it involves every aspect of your life and can be exhausting and heart breaking, so it's not for everyone. But the rewards are like nothing else so we would encourage people to make that call and find out more. It might change your life for the better like it did for us."

By fostering directly with the Council, all funding can be directly allocated to the local community, rather than lost in costly placements outside the district or Out Of Authority Care, which has a direct positive impact on local children and young people.

Kevin Williams, Chief Executive of The Fostering Network, said:- "Despite the practical and emotional challenges that the Pandemic has brought, foster carers have continued to provide day to day support, love and stability to children and young people who can't live with their birth families and from the bottom of my heart, I thank them. Being a foster carer is to take on a role like no other, so if you are looking for a new lifestyle or career in the aftermath of this dreadful Pandemic and you believe you have the right skills, I want you to consider becoming a foster carer."

Anyone interested in finding out more can visit the new Fostering Bradford website at:- FosteringBradford.com and book a call back with a member of the fostering team for an informal conversation about the journey to becoming a foster carer and what to expect.

2 sentenced for graffiti Merseyside

2 vandals who caused damage to train stock have been sentenced following a British Transport Police investigation. Kyle Mark Smith, aged 27, from Birkenhead and Adam Metcalfe, aged 30, from Tranmere, both pleaded guilty to criminal damage. Smith, who was in breach of a criminal behaviour order banning him from entering non public parts of the railway was sentenced, on Friday, 12 March 2021, to 4 months imprisonment suspended for 18 months and ordered to carry out 120 hours unpaid work and pay a victim surcharge of ₤128. Metcalfe appeared before Liverpool, Knowsley and St Helens Magistrates' Court, on Tuesday, 4 May 2021 and was fined ₤120 and ordered to pay compensation of ₤500, as well as a victim surcharge of ₤34. On Friday, 12 February 2021, just before 6pm, British Transport Police were alerted to the 2 men spray painting graffiti on a stationary train, at Allerton Rail Depot. A BTP dog handler attended and located Smith and Metcalfe. Both had paint splatter on their clothes and were carrying rucksacks. When searched they were both found to be in possession of spray paint cans.

Investigating officer PC Paul Quest said:- "Graffiti is not a victimless crime it is vandalism and has severe consequences for passengers-when trains are taken out of service for repairs and cleaning this results in delays and cancellations. Thousands of pounds are spent repairing this damage and the financial implications for the rail industry are huge. We will continue to treat graffiti on the railway for what it is-wanton criminal damage which will not be tolerated."

Chris Jackson, Regional Director at Northern, said:- "Graffiti causes thousands of pounds of damage and has a significant impact not just on rail operators, but also customers whose journeys can be affected when trains are taken out of service to be cleaned. We are modernising many parts of the Northern network and included in this is enhanced CCTV at our stations, on our trains and at our depots. Thankfully this can provide vital evidence to our colleagues at British Transport Police and help with investigations such as this. We will continue to work with BTP and do all we can to help bring offenders to justice."

Letter to Editor:- "Cancer still matters."

"CONGRATULATIONS to Steve Rotheram on being re-elected as Mayor of Liverpool City Region. Over the last few weeks campaigners across the North West signed an open letter encouraging our Mayoral Candidates to become Cancer Champions. Now that you have been re-elected to office the plea remains the same; become a Cancer Champion and commit your support to the 53,000 people living with cancer in the Liverpool City Region who need your help now more than ever. Macmillan Cancer Support are still hearing from people in desperate need. The Pandemic has led to thousands of vital cancer treatments and appointments being postponed, cancelled or changed. Since the start of the outbreak, 1,415 fewer people in the Liverpool City Region have started cancer treatment compared to the year before. The Pandemic is continuing to take its toll on people who are already struggling with their cancer diagnosis. The Liverpool City Region Mayor can help by becoming a Cancer Champion; a prominent voice for people living with cancer and I am asking you to work with me and Macmillan to:-

1. Make sure everyone knows how to get cancer support.

2. Meet with people living with cancer in Greater Manchester and myself within the 1st 100 days being in office.

3. Take part in or host a World's Biggest Coffee Morning this September to help raise funds for people living with cancer.

Cancer matters, does it matter to you?"
Nancy Whittaker, Acting Macmillan Head of Partnerships North West and North of England, Macmillan Cancer Support.
