Looking at local businesses:- 'Sweet Rosso Tomatoes Southport'

BACK in December 2019, we started to look, at doing reports about local businesses and showing off what Merseyside has to offer... This is our 1st video. Sadly, as with any 1st, we are on a learning curve, and yes we are aware of a problem at times with the audio. Yep, we will confirm, you should never interview in a greenhouse with wind, rain outside and inside an automatic environmental system working. But, other than that, we are pleased with the result, in getting a very interesting an unusual business to highlight. We are looking for others, so please do get in contact if you have an equally interesting business... Anyway, enough of the waffle... So what is this video about?

Just after the UK Lockdown's ended we have had the honour of interviewing a Southport based tomato grower, Andy Roe,, who has been championed in M&S' biggest ever British Farming Campaign.  For this interview we headed over to Flavorfresh, a family run farm, that has partnered with M&S for over 20 years, providing over 30 million packs of tomatoes to customers during this time, to find out more.  In this interview you can he that Flavorfresh's Tomato Production Manager, Andy Roe, is really passionate about all things tomato. In fact, as you will hear, Andy is particularly proud of their Sweet Rosso Tomatoes, which are known for their delicious taste.  At this point, we will point out that we have NOT been paid to do this video or to confirm, we also are extremely impressed by both the Sweet Rossos and Piccolo tomatoes that Andy recommends eating.

Within this video, Andy also explains a bit about his firm's sustainability projects, which Andy is also particularly passionate about. If you visit one of Flavourfresh's growing sites you will likely see bees, butterflies, and other wildlife buzzing among the wildflowers planted nearby. Besides creating specific habitats for pollinating insects, Flavourfresh also uses technology to minimise their impact on the environment. Something we hope to follow up within another video at a later stage.

If you have not had a chance to try these tomatoes, we recommend you pop into your local M&S Food store and pick some up. Not only are they very tasty, you also help support a UK business, based on Merseyside, in the UK.  You can watch Flavorfresh's TV video here and find some delicious recipes on:- here, and here...

If you have a business that you think we might like to find out more about, like this, and you are within the Liverpool City Region, please do drop us an email, to News24@SouthportReporter.Com with your full contact information and a description about your business.

Liverpool Architecture Festival announces expert panel from industry and TV to judge competition to design Liverpool Townhouse of the future

CHANNEL 4 Grand Designs presenter Kevin McCloud joins Stirling Prize winning Architect Paul Monaghan and the Government's Chief Planner on judging panel for contest to design a post-Covid house of the future Liverpool City Region's Design Champion is to chair a panel of leading names in architecture and design to judge a contest to design a:- "Post Covid Town House."

The event is part of the inaugural Liverpool Architecture Festival supported by Metro Mayor Steve Rotheram; the 1st ever event to showcase the City Region's architectural heritage and work to improve its future buildings and public spaces. Stirling Prize winning Architect Paul Monaghan, a founding partner of Allford Hall Monaghan Morris, who designed the bereavement counselling centre at Alder Hey Children's Hospital, will be joined by industry experts including:- Grand Designs TV Presenter Kevin McCloud and the Government's Chief Planning Officer, Joanna Averley.

The competition; to find a realistic design for an energy efficient family home which could be taken forward as a deliverable scheme; is open to architects and students across the UK and offers a 1st prize of ₤4,000 with ₤1,000 for the runner up. Steve Rotheram, Metro Mayor of the Liverpool City Region said:- "The massive increase in people working from home during the pandemic has led to a lot of us rethinking our homes. No longer just a place for sleeping, our homes have become offices, gyms and much more too. I supported the Liverpool Architecture Festival because I believe that it's vital that we rethink the way we design and build across our Region. The Townhouse competition will be a really interesting 1st step toward that, with entrants looking to design the affordable, environmentally friendly and comfortable home of the future. We can't build back better unless we start to build better too; and I'm sure this contest will help show us what that looks like."

The festival opens in October 2021 with a 2 week programme of lectures, workshops, walking and building tours, open studios and a symposium on the potential listed buildings of the future. The Liverpool Townhouse competition brief challenges entrants to design a high density family home which provides an efficient use of land with facilities that address the impact of the Covid Pandemic. It should also include:- private amenity space, secure cycle parking, home office space and needs to incorporate climate mitigation measures, providing:- "a realistic approach to cost and build ability as winning designs could be taken forward as deliverable scheme."

Design Champion Paul Monaghan said:- "As we emerge from the pandemic and lockdowns, this seems like the perfect opportunity to think about how the last 18 months have changed our perception of home. People in the future will clearly need space for home working while useable outdoor space has become so much more important; I'm also hoping there will be some innovative solutions in terms of addressing the climate crisis. It is also important that entrants recognise how the rich architectural heritage of the City Region could influence new designs."

Completing the judging panel are:- Plus Dane Housing Group's Former Chief Executive Barbara Spicer, James Soane, Director of Project Orange Architecture, Hazel Rounding, Director of Shed KM Architects and Lifa Zvimbande, Regional Director of RIBA North West.

Applications must be submitted to:- DesignHouse@LiverpoolCityRegion-CA.Gov.UK, by 5pm, on 29 September 2021, with a deadline for Q&A of 28 August 2021.
