The Clatterbridge Cancer Charity runners to be part of the World's 1st 100,000 Person Marathon

THE Clatterbridge Cancer Charity recently invited their supporters to raise cash for local people with cancer by taking part in the Virtual Virgin Money London Marathon. Among those who stepped up to the challenge are Dr Rosemary Lord and Dr Danielle Shaw, who will be raising money for The Clatterbridge Cancer Charity, the Charity which supports their work.

Dr Danielle Shaw told us:- "It's a bit crazy, but Rosie and I are the 2 Gynae Oncologists for The Clatterbridge Cancer Centre. We work together very closely, and we're also running partners. We are passionate about cancer care, and as we both run we felt like we couldn't say no to this! Neither of us has run a marathon, but we have been running regularly together throughout all of the lockdowns in 2020."

Dr Rosemary Lord added:- "We've been building up to ˝ marathon distances, and we can comfortably run up to 15 miles together. It's definitely a challenge, and it was an opportunity for us to raise awareness and much needed funds in our local community. We felt that we had to answer the call for Clatterbridge. Cancer care and Clatterbridge are important to both of us, and our new hospital is something we're both very proud of. The money that we raise will contribute to the research of cancer care in the future. I feel really proud of that; we do what we do because it's important to us."

On Sunday 3 October 2021, 50,000 participants will take on the traditional Marathon course from London's Blackheath to The Mall; an increase of more than 7,000 on the previous finisher record; whilst a further 50,000 people around the globe will run the 26.2 miles on the course of their choice, in a virtual event.

The physical and mental health benefits of being active have been brought sharply into focus during the Pandemic, and this biggest ever London Marathon offers more people than ever before the chance to experience these benefits while raising much needed funds for Clatterbridge.

Mark Parkinson, Events Fundraising Manager, at The Clatterbridge Cancer Charity, said:- "When the Virgin London Marathon added the virtual element we knew we wanted to be a part of it, and the fantastic support from 2 of our wonderful consultants blew us away. We are so proud of all of our colleagues at Clatterbridge, but to see Rosie and Danielle take it even further is amazing; so many of our staff do get involved in fundraising and events and we couldn't be happier. The money they raise will support life saving research into new ways to treat cancer, support clinical trials at Clatterbridge and fund innovations in care that will impact all of our patients."
