Metro Mayor Supports Scheme Offering Free Broadband for Jobseekers

LIVERPOOL City Region Metro Mayor Steve Rotheram is lending his support to a new scheme that offers eligible jobseekers across the Region 6 months of free broadband to help them with their search for work. Funded by the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP), the aim is to give eligible recipients the best possible chance to find work by tackling digital exclusion and removing barriers to employment.

Under the scheme, recipients are offered a voucher for 6 months of free unlimited broadband for the household; with a router and internet security packages included free of charge. The package is the latest in an expansive programme of support offered across the Liverpool City Region to help people find decent, well-paid and secure work.

Since 2017, Metro Mayor Steve Rotheram's Households into Work programme has helped more than 2,200 people across the City Region with work coaching, interview preparation and emotional support and guidance. 20% of those on the programme have never worked before, while more than 250 have successfully found work.

Tackling poverty of opportunity and digital exclusion are key priorities for Mayor Rotheram and his administration. Following May's elections, he announced plans to deliver a Young Person's Guarantee: a promise of a job, training or apprenticeship opportunity to all under-25s in the City Region within 6 months of leaving School or becoming unemployed.

Steve Rotheram, Mayor of the Liverpool City Region said:- "It's almost impossible to get by these days without access to decent, reliable internet. Everything from paying bills and claiming benefits, to streaming TV and keeping in touch with our loved ones needs some form of connection. Too often people in our Region are denied the chance to get on, not because they lack talent but because they lack opportunity. I'm working to make sure that everyone has access to those opportunities, from School leavers looking for a start in life, right the way through to people struggling with long term unemployment. This free broadband offer will be a massive, massive help to many people across the Region, helping not only the recipients but their households too."

Daniel Kasmir, Chief People and Procurement Officer at TalkTalk said:- "We believe that reliable broadband is a right not a privilege. However, many people in the Liverpool Region are struggling to access to the internet, with the effects of the Pandemic leading to the number of Universal Credit claimants doubling within a year. This service was trialled in the North West prior to its national roll out, and we're proud to be working with the Mayor to get it to as many people as possible who need it"

Minister for Employment, Mims Davies said:- "We want to support jobseekers in any way we can on their journey to securing employment, which includes levelling up opportunities by making sure they are digitally connected and can access the full range of support offered by our Plan for Jobs and our Job Help website."

Top Liverpool DJ leads Halloween event to raise vital funds for the City's homeless

AS the City Centre prepares itself for a busy period over Halloween, with bars, restaurants and leisure venues getting in on the party, leading Liverpool music name Deejay David Soul, who built a sterling reputation especially during the nineties, is hosting a unique event in Seel Street, which is headlined as his Old Skool Festival.

This talented and experienced DJ has already proved a hit with his retro Soul Train residency in Seel Street, and is now taking it larger, and outside, so he can welcome more guests in the road's Car Park area, which will be accommodated by a full size, heated marquee, to suit partygoers whatever the weather.

The theme of the event is to bring Over 25 club lovers a taste of all of the legendary nightclubs which made the City Centre the place to be during the 1980's and 1990's, including:- Club Continental, The State, Kirklands, Cagney's, The Buzz, Quinns and many more. There has already been a hugely warm reception for the vibe provided by Deejay David Soul, and his host of guest DJs, who pack out Soul Train every weekend. David explains:- "The 80's and 90's were such busy times for clubbers in the city, not just locally, but for people coming from all over the UK, and around the globe, to have a brilliant night out here. Obviously, the City now caters brilliantly for younger club goers, but I didn't want people from our over 25 gang to feel left behind: I can honestly tell you from my experiences at Soul Train, they still love to party! And the scope of venues we reference, from the Coconut Grove to the Paradox, covers a whole range of dance genres, so there is something for everyone who had a good time back in the day. We are also excited to welcome 2 Funky 2 to the stage at the event, to play their huge hit 'Brothers and Sisters' which is still a legendary and much loved club anthem, and always gets the crowd going. As we have a festival feel this time, it means we can begin in the afternoon, and go right on until late. I'm also really proud that we will be fundraising at this special event to raise vital funds for Liverpool's leading homeless charities. This is a City with a huge, generous heart and I know at this time of the year in particular, we all want to do more to help anyone who is in need of assistance, whether it be immediate support and also long term care. I really look forward to seeing everyone who enjoys Soul Train on Halloween, and also new faces throughout the day and evening. Of course, we want to transport you back to your clubbing glory days, but we also want to do so in a 2021 location, bringing together so many noted DJs, names and themes, making sure that Old Skool Festival goes off in style."

Anyone who wants to join in is encouraged to dress to impress: it is definitely an opportunity to rock a Halloween look with some back in time details. Admission to the event is free and starts at 1pm, going on until late. No tickets are required, but stylish, shoulder padded, raving ghouls are definitely welcome.  For further information about Old Skool Festival and Deejay David Soul's Soul Train reference their socials on both:-  Instagram and:- Facebook.
