UK anti lockdown protesters clash with Police in both Liverpool and Bristol

ON Saturday, 14 November 2020, a few hundred people brought shame to Liverpool and Bristol, defying warnings that they could be fined for violating Covid19 restrictions, and clashes with Police leading to dozens of arrests.

In Liverpool the anti lockdown protest demonstrators have upset many of the City's residents, and we have been told that many of the protesters that took part are not from the Liverpool City Region. If true this is even more upsetting as the vast majority of people, on Merseyside and within the Liverpool City Region, have been abiding by lockdown rules and also huge waves of people have also got tested, order to help curb the spread of Coronavirus. Sadly this could all have been put into jeopardy. We are also told that most taking part did not have face masks on and defied recommendations on social distance, along with breaching a dispersal zone, adding to the areas concerns. Many took to twitter and social media to voice their disapproval of the protesters and saying that they:- "do not speak for us!"

Following the march a Merseyside Police spokesman said in a press statement that 27 protesters had since been detained for:- "public order and breach of Coronavirus regulations." We are also told that a surveillance aircraft was also used to record images for Merseyside Police, as it circled for almost 2 hours and more arrests are likely to be made.

Merseyside Police said:- "We continue to thank the vast majority of people who are abiding by the lockdown rules and continuing to say at home to keep us all safe. Unfortunately a small number of selfish and irresponsible individuals have chosen to gather in the City Centre, putting themselves, their families, the public and our staff at risk from the Global Pandemic. We would like to remind people that there is currently a dispersal zone in Liverpool City Centre and parts of Liverpool. Liverpool is now in the second week of a mass testing scheme in a bid to combat Coronavirus and most people are choosing to do the responsible thing in order to protect themselves, their families and friends. Please help to keep the infection rate down and shorten the Lockdown by following the rules. Protests like this are not helping and could make things worse, not better!"

In Bristol, we are told that around 200 people flouted national lockdown rules as they marched through the City Centre, as Authorities warned Bristol is at a "very critical point" as infections continue to rise. Avon and Somerset Police confirmed that 14 people have been arrested, including 1 suspected of assaulting a Police Officer.

But this protest does highlight a worrying issue, that of a grown distrust and frustration in the handling of the Virus, but as Merseyside Police said:- "selfish and irresponsible" acts like this are not helping the issues we face. But it does give a warning of what could happen if the Government does not get things under control soon and with Boris Johnson again self isolating after MP tests positive for Covid19, this could be a big ask.
