Small change to make a big difference to Veterans

FORMER Armed Forces personnel are being urged to inform the Department for Work and Pensions that they are veterans when applying for Universal Credit so they can access a wealth of additional support tailored to their specific needs. DWP has introduced a simple tick box on its Universal Credit online application form to make it as easy as possible. Veterans who tick it will be assigned a specialist Armed Forces Champion Work Coach who will deliver tailored employment support and benefits advice as well as sign post them to other organisations where appropriate.

UK Government Minister for Welfare Delivery, Will Quince, said:- "Those who are serving in the Armed Forces provide an invaluable contribution to society and it's important they, and their families, feel fully supported when claiming benefits. Former personnel have a unique set of highly transferable skills and ensuring they receive the best support right from the start is a key part of why the employment rate for veterans is even higher than in the general population. This move will help us better match our resources to demand, and enable us to carry out further research on employment outcomes for veterans."

UK Government Minister for Defence People and Veterans, Leo Docherty, said:- "This extra support underlines the Government's commitment to ensuring that veterans get the support they need. I encourage all veterans applying for Universal Credit to access this specialist service, so we can continue to support you, including with DWP's Armed Forces Champions."

Previously the Department learned of a person's veteran status when they had their 1st Work Coach interview, but now those processing applications will know from the first day a claim is made.

Every Jobcentre Plus district in the country now has an Armed Forces Champion standing by to support former services personnel and their families.

The new network of 50 local Champions are stationed in Jobcentres in England, Scotland and Wales alongside an additional 11 Armed Forces Champions Leads. Many Armed Forces Champions have themselves previously served in the forces and draw upon their own experiences to help veterans move forward.

Paul Paskins, an Armed Forces Champions Lead, said:- "Claiming financial support shouldn't be a worry when adjusting to civilian life. We want service personnel and their families to feel confident in claiming the benefits they’re entitled to, and access the support that is on offer through Jobcentre Plus. Everyone who makes a claim to Universal Credit will be assigned a Work Coach at 1 of our jobcentres. They will assist them to help remove the barriers to work, help with CVs, interview skills and finding a job. A raft of support is available."

LGA responds to Prime Minister’s announcement on easing restrictions

RESPONDING to the Prime Minister’s announcement this evening about the planned easing of Coronavirus restrictions on 19 July, Cllr James Jamieson, Chairman of the Local Government Association, said:- "This Pandemic has taken its toll on everyone with many sacrifices having been made. Whilst we are all keen to get back to normal as soon as possible, we all still need to remain vigilant and use common sense wherever necessary. Councils have already done a fantastic job in supporting their communities and will continue to do so as our local businesses and the economy begins to recover. However, we must ensure those still vulnerable to the virus are fully protected at all times. Public health teams are still working around the clock with our NHS colleagues to help tackle vaccine hesitancy, providing reassurance and helping to address concerns. It is vital that they are able to make full use of their public health powers to manage any future local outbreaks. We need to build on what we have learnt so far to make ourselves as prepared as possible for future Variants of Concern, including being able to quickly stand up the infrastructure councils have rapidly created during the pandemic, such as local test and trace partnerships.”

CLA welcomes the UK Government's move but warns of need for long term support

AT the Cereals 2021 agricultural show, Secretary of State for Defra George Eustice announced further information about the Sustainable Farming Incentive scheme, which English farmers can sign up to from next spring. Farmers will be able to earn up to ₤70 per hectare for actions to improve the health of their soil and livestock farmers will be eligible for a free vet led annual health and welfare review. The Sustainable Farming Incentive is a new environmental land management scheme that will reward farmers for adopting more sustainable farming approaches.4 guiding Principles have been published which set out the approach to environmental scheme payments under the Agricultural Transition Plan. This includes new environmental land management schemes such as the Sustainable Farming Incentive, pre-existing ones like Countryside Stewardship, and time limited schemes such as Farming in Protected Landscapes

The principles are that:-

Payments should provide good value for money and achieve ambitious environment and climate change outcomes. Payment rates will be set to encourage wide participation, fairly and effectively paying farmers for achieving these outcomes.

Payments should, as far as possible, pay for environmental outcomes by recognising and rewarding the full range of activities that achieve environmental and climate outcomes.

Payments should recognise the value of existing natural assets and do not unfairly disadvantage those who are already achieving good environmental and climate outcomes.

Payments should form part of a market for environmental outcomes where scheme participants can earn income from public and private sector sources.

Mark Bridgeman, President of the CLA, said:- "The CLA has consistently argued for higher Countryside Stewardship payments, and called for Environmental Land Management (ELM) payment rates to be high enough to attract support from farmers across the country. It appears that Government is listening. We welcome Government's ambitions to roll out ELM schemes early in the transition, providing certainty and clarity to farmers who may already be struggling with reductions to their BPS payments. But a word of caution. Many farms have not even started to plan for the major changes that reductions to direct payment will cause. This is especially the case on small farms that have less ability to diversify or intensify. If Government genuinely seeks improved environmental outcomes from the agricultural sector then it needs to ensure farming enterprises can survive and thrive in the first place. It is vital that Government does all it can to support these businesses now and in the long term, incentivising farmers properly to embrace the full spectrum of ELM schemes and early notification of farming investment grants and advice programmes."
