Southport and Birkdale Sports Club seeks support for Indoor School fundraising appeal

1 of the oldest multi Sports and Social Clubs in the North West is in a race against time to raise money for new Indoor School facilities. Southport and Birkdale Sports Club, known locally as SandB, has been hosting a variety of sports for men, women and children of all ages since 1859. SandB has now launched a crowd funding appeal through Space Hive to help them to realise their ambition of making improvements at its Indoor School, which is more than 80 years old. New facilities would not only benefit club members, but also Local Schools, and the wider Southport community as well.

SandB Chairman Andrew Carney said:- “We are currently raising funds for our Indoor School Facilities. Unlike other campaigns the concept here is to target a large number of people for a small donation. To find out more you can go to:- SpaceHive.Com. Please help us to make this happen. Any small donation will help a lot! So far the appeal has raised ₤6,390 with 56 backers. But we still need to raise ₤8,397 and have under 30 days left, to get there!"

Originally a Cricket Club dating back to 1859, Southport and Birkdale Sports Club has continued to grow over the years with:- hockey, tennis, squash and snooker, all being played at Trafalgar Road. SandB recently applied for ₤3,000 funding from the fourth round of Sefton Council's Sefton Crowd fund for its indoor facilities. They have been granted ₤750. The club is now appealing for local people to help them reach their fundraising target.  Funds will go towards carrying out further improvements to the SandB indoor Cricket School, including:- new flooring, netting, and bowling machines.

Southport and Birkdale Cricket Club is a local community club providing the opportunity for Minis, Juniors, Ladies and Mens cricket. They have 50 juniors, 50 Senior Men and 20 Ladies players. The Indoor School is approximately 6 metres wide and 30 metres long and has 1 practice cricket lane in it. It is made of brick and a corrugated roof and is over 80 years old. In 2019 the club raised funds from various events and invested ₤7,000 in repairing the building with new lights and a new insulated roof.

"A team of volunteers spent 6 weekends cleaning, tidying and painting the indoor walls floors and roof to make the facility useable. Despite these improvements to the indoor School, the club has:- a 15 year old bowling machine, 10 year old safety netting and 10 year old artificial matting. We therefore require:- 2 new bowling machines, new artificial matting and underlay, and new surround safety netting."
said Andrew Carney.

SandB has been in direct contact with Junior Schools, within Southport, as well as St Philips, Our Lady of Lourdes and Farnborough Road, Christ the King, Birkdale High School, and Scarisbrick Hall School and local Cricket Clubs who will all participate in using the facility along with local Cricket Clubs. This facility will give the club the ability to reach out into the community and engage with Schools and clubs to attract players from all ages and backgrounds. It will enable the club to provide an enjoyable experience while learning and developing the skills required to play the game of cricket. This will be an all year round facility with maximum usage expected. The facility will enable more people to become involved in physical activity.

Southport Christmas Parade 2020 is Cancelled

SADLY the Southport Christmas Parade is yet another event of 2020 to be cancelled due to the Pandemic. The organizers, Adam and Paul, have worked very hard to try to make the event go ahead, but Sunday, 6 December's event wasn't able to be salvaged. They have said that:- "Due to a change in the Government guidelines we are unfortunately going to had to cancel this year's Charity Christmas Parade. Both of us have spent all many hours on the phone, to the Police, both in Merseyside and in West Lancashire, as well as all the relevant local authorities, in order to try and make it happen. Unfortunately, it just isn't possible to the mixing of Tiers and the expected mass gatherings of spectators has also meant it was a worry by the Authorities. As ever, our main priority is your safety and it was with a heavy heart we all agree that it had to be cancelled. We will be back next year, bigger than ever. Please keep following our Facebook Page for all updates on the toys being donated and we are in plans for a special event coming soon, once things are safe again. We just want to take the time to thank you for all your support and the toy donations it truly means the world to us. If all goes to plan, see you in 2021..."

This footage was 2019's event and what 2020 should have been like, but let's hope 2021 is bigger and better still... If you have a float, truck, van, or car and would like to enter, get in contact with them via Facebook, and via email at:- Info@LifeTimeExperience.Co.UK to get your place, as they are limited and fill up fast. .
