Three Lions inspiring 59% of kids to play football for the 1st time

AS the Three Lions progress into their 1st ever Euro final, research from McDonald's shows children across the country are inspired to take their 1st steps to the game, with 59% of UK parents seeing their child inspired by their nation's performances in the Euros.  McDonald's is putting on Fun Football sessions across the country to help children start their football journey for free, as research shows 47% of parents fear the cost of football training sessions being a barrier to their kids playing. While England netted their 2nd goal to seal their place in the Euro 2020 final, McDonald's has seen a huge surge in sign ups to its Fun Football sessions in England with a 111% increase following the Three Lions history making route to the final, leading to McDonald's having to put on extra sessions to fulfil demand. Fun Football sessions are for boys and girls aged 5 to 11, of all abilities, and are led by a fully qualified Fun Football coach. Activities include:- skills sessions, team building exercises and football games, similar to ones McDonald's Ambassador and England midfielder Kalvin Phillips would have enjoyed when he played at his grassroots club Wortley FC at the same age.

Kalvin Phillips, England international said:- "Since I was a kid, I would play football wherever or whenever I could, before school, at Wortley or over at mushy fields. I'd play with anyone, my mates, my brother, my sisters. I'd always have a ball at my feet, because for me, it was all about having fun and the people I was with. None of that's changed, even today playing with England! That's why I'm excited to team up with McDonald's to encourage more kids to try football for the first time and enjoy themselves through their free Fun Football sessions."

This summer McDonald's is hosting thousands of Fun Football sessions across the UK and is committing to deliver over one million hours of free football, giving thousands of kids aged:- 5 to 11 the chance to play.  McDonald's is the longest standing supporter of grassroots football in the UK having worked with the four UK FAs for 19 years. The Fun Football programme aims to introduce children with no footballing experience to the beautiful game, helping them develop their all round skills in a safe, fun and pressure free environment. National Minimum Wage rate reminder for summer staff

UK Students and seasonal staff working in the North West are being reminded by HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC) to check that they are being paid the National Minimum Wage (NMW). All workers are legally entitled to be paid the NMW. This includes temporary seasonal staff, who often work short term contracts in:- bars, hotels, shops and warehouses over the summer. Over the last Tax Year, 2020 to 2021, HMRC helped 155,000 workers across the UK to recover more than ₤16 million in pay which was due to them. HMRC is reminding workers to check their hourly rate of pay, and to also check any deductions or unpaid working time. 1 person who has benefitted from HMRC's enforcement of the NMW is Amber, a marketing apprentice. She was concerned that she was not being paid correctly, so contacted HMRC online. HMRC looked into Amber's concerns and spoke with her employer. Amber was being underpaid and she received ₤1,900 in back pay.

The National Minimum Wage hourly rates are currently:-

₤8.91 - Age 23 or over (National Living Wage).

₤8.36 - Age 21 to 22.

₤6.56 - Age 18 to 20.

₤4.62 - Age under 18.

₤4.30 - Apprentice.

Steve Timewell, Director, Individuals and Small Business Compliance, HMRC, said:- "We want to ensure that the North West's seasonal workers and students are being paid what they are entitled to and, as the economy reopens, help employers if they are unsure of the rules. Workers should check their hourly rate and look out for any deductions or unpaid working time which would reduce their pay. It could take them below the minimum wage. HMRC investigates every complaint made about the minimum wage, so whether you are selling sun cream, cleaning a hotel room or serving a strawberry smoothie, if you think you are being short changed you should get in touch."

Anyone not being paid what they are entitled to can complain online. If they want to speak to someone, they should phone the Acas Pay and Work Rights Helpline on:- 03001231100, who may transfer the call to HMRC. Employers can also contact the ACAS Helpline for free help and advice or visit:- Gov.UK to find out more.
