CLA calling for clarity on available business support in Lancashire

THE Country Land and Business Association (CLA) is urging clarity on financial support available to rural businesses within the hospitality and tourism sector. Lancashire's Tier 3 classification restricts social interaction, resulting in a sharp decline in visitor numbers. By contrast, the Welsh Government announced a clear support package to cover the period of their 'firebreak' lockdown whereby every firm covered by small business rates relief would receive a ₤1,000 payment, and that small and medium sized retail, leisure and hospitality firms that have to close will be entitled to a 1 off payment of up to ₤5,000 in addition to extra discretionary grants and support for smaller businesses. In Lancashire, the Government announced a ₤12million support package for businesses, however, the detail on how this will be apportioned is still uncertain.

CLA member John Welbank, owns and manages Ireby Green, an independent family run farm, café and caravan park situated in the upper Lune Valley near Kirkby Lonsdale, expressing his frustration, said:- "As a hospitality business in a tier 3 area, it seems like we're being sacrificed, especially since this announcement was made without any information for affected businesses. More details are needed on, not only the regulations for businesses such as ours, but also details of the available support. We understand the Government thinking behind a tier 3 lockdown, but to make this announcement without any detail will no doubt have dire consequences for businesses especially in the hospitality and tourism sector. For us, it is galling to be only 200 metres from the Yorkshire boundary, and 2 km from the Cumbrian border, both of which are considerably less restricted than Lancashire. Politicians locally have not helped to provide clarity either."

CLA Director North Dorothy Fairburn said:- "We call on local politicians to clarify details of available business support, and to properly consider the impacts their decisions have on businesses. Especially important is that businesses should be informed of changes in rules to give them time to adapt in, what is, already a highly challenging situation. It's even more important that the Government release, as a priority, the funding they have promised to support businesses, and we have raised this with Whitehall."
