Kings Gardens' tactile and Braille signs

A reader has contacted us after he was out with his blind sister in Southport and encountered difficulties. As many local groups, including:- Southport Access For Everyone (SAFE) and Friends of Kings Gardens have done a fantastic job restructuring the newly refurbished Kings Gardens, and the area is now regarded as extremely accessible, we were puzzled to hear this. "I was out in Southport and we have been told that the area around the lake has signs that have audio description to help visually impaired people orientate their way around the Gardens, along with tactile and Braille signs. This got us interested so we took a look. What surprised me was the fact that my sister could not access the tactile and Braille signage, due to plastic covers being over them. Did you know about this and why are they covered?" On hearing this we headed over to the area and took a look and found that they have indeed been covered. We are told that the plastic was added to protect them from vandalism and is removed during the day time in the summer, but kept on at other times to protect them. A local business located in the area of the Gardens confirmed that this does indeed take place and also said they are puzzled as to why they did not make a metal sign that would not need to have the protection like this one requires. So what are your views on this matter? Do you think it is an issue that requires a closer look? Please email us to:- News24@SouthportReporter.com and also let us know what other signs and locations might benefit from the addition of tactile and Braille signage.
