Frack Free Formby Residents Meeting

ON Tuesday, 6 February 2017, an action group called:- "Frack Free Formby" held an open meeting aimed at raising awareness and preparing for Aurora's community engagement event that we have previously reported on, within our 13 January 2018's edition. The event focused on the Scottish firm, Aurora Energy Resources plans to drill 2 exploratory wells, within the Altcar Moss area and the issues that locals could face have should they get the green light. The event at the Gild Hall, Formby, was very well attended, but we could only see a few young people at the meeting, suggesting to us a lack of knowledge about the meeting or interest within the subject from young people. But those who did attended the event were mostly from the Formby area and were deeply concerned about the plans.

John Wilkinson, from Frack Free Formby said:- "Nearly 200 local residents attended a meeting in the Gild Hall, Formby, to learn more about Aurora's plans to drill 2 wells near Great Altcar to search for shale gas. The event was organised by Frack Free Formby following the submission of a petition containing 3,600 names 2 weeks ago calling for Sefton to be made a 'Frack Free Zone.' The presentations included the threat being faced locally due to fracking, renewable alternatives, and what it was like to live near a fracking site. This was followed by a brief outline of what the Group had been done so far, what they were planning, and suggestions as to how local residents could help. This was followed by a vigorous question and answer session. Frack Free Formby was delighted at the turnout on a bitterly cold evening, and the expressions of support they received. They feel that the tide of public opinion is clearly flowing against fracking as more people begin to fully understand the implications. Local anti fracking groups and local councils have formed:- 'The Moss Alliance' in order to co-ordinate objections to Aurora's proposals."

This meeting followed on from many local councillors voicing concerns along with the regions 1st Liverpool City Region Metro Mayor, Steve Rotheram comments to the media, saying that their is "no justification" for fracking plans in the area.
