Review:- "Matthew Bourne's Cinderella"
Photos by Hugo Glendinning. Review by Darija Ibrajeva.

IF you expect to see a pink vanilla fairytale with its magic forests, pumpkin carriage, luxurious royal ball and a happy ending, you definitely don't know Matthew Bourne! No, the happy ending is still there, but before that you need to go through a bombed out London, roar of air raid sirens and heaps of death. In other words welcome to Cinderella with a devilish twist!

Yes, Bourne's Cinderella is a very dark, but still very romantic story about the war and the miracle of love during the wartime. He brings us to London during the Blitz. His Cinderella is a servant in a rich house of her malicious step family. Prince is transformed into a shell-shocked RAF pilot. And instead of being separated by a sound of old clock chimes at midnight, they are parted by a sudden sound of air raid sirens.

It's a truly gorgeous production with jaw-dropping visuals and stunning choreography. Lez Brotherston’s set and costume designs are exquisite as always. Neil Austin’s lighting design is above all praise, and Prokofiev's magnificent score written during World War II proves to be the perfect accompaniment to this new version of Cinderella. But of course the main heroes are the dancers. The distinguishing feature of Bourne is that he always uses every single 1 of his dancers on the stage. Even while the main focus of the action is happening elsewhere, his dancers enthusiastically embody their characters at every turn.

If you've read some of my previous reviews of Bourne's work, you should know that I'm totally in love with Ashley Shaw. So when I found out that she will be staring in the title role, there was no limit to my joy! She is so light-footed, so graceful, so amazing! Seriously, if she would be the only dancer to perform over those 2 and a half hours, I wouldn't mind at all. The witty waltz with a tailor's dummy was such a treat for the eyes!

Will Bozier is playing a shell-shocked RAF pilot, Anjali Mehra makes a deliciously devilish stepmother whilst Liam Mower is portraying the mysterious, silk-suited Angel (Bourne’s substitute for the fairy godmother). It’s even hard to highlight anyone, as apart from being real dance professionals, each of them managed to grow into their role so naturally that you simply believed them from the beginning right through to the very end.

Bravo Matthew Bourne! Once again you turned an average fairy tale into something truly special! All of you who still haven’t seen this dark masterpiece, make sure you get your tickets, as Bourne’s Cinderella is heading to the Liverpool Empire this April.
