Photos and video by Patrick Trollope.

ON Wednesday, 16 May 2018, Stadler Rail Service UK Ltd. held aa 'Breaking Ground' Ceremony, at Merseyrail's Kirkdale Depot. The historic event marked the official start of the building of a £20 million train depot, on the site, ahead of the arrival of the brand new, state of the art trains that are due to replace the near 40 years old Merseyrail fleet.

Attending this event were:- Liverpool City Region Metro Mayor, Steve Rotheram, Stadler Executive Vice President Jürg Gygax, Liverpool City Region Transport Portfolio Holder, Councillor Liam Robinson and other guests from the local councils and rail industry.

The event also gave those attending an opportunity to hear from them how this transformative project is progressing and to get a unique insight into the effect Stadler’s new fleet will have on travel in the City. The announcements also included information about job creation schemes and that the Kirkdale Depot will become their home of the UK division of Stadler Rail Service UK Ltd.

A huge amount of hope is being placed on these new trains, as they will be some of the most modern trains operating in the UK. It is hoped that it will increase the services reliability, even further as a direct result; they will also be providing improved comfortable travel, with their revolutionary design for people with mobility needs. Those attending the meeting also had the opportunity to see this for themselves, thanks to a Virtual Reality set-up which was shown to the public for the 1st time.

This footage is of the presentation that took place before the main event outside.

Video footage was taken on 16 May, 2018, at the site of a new Merseyrail, Stadler Rail, Kirkdale Depot, in Liverpool, of a Time Capsule being buried by Liverpool City Region's Metro Mayor, Steve Rotheram & other VIP's from Merseytravel, Stadler Rail, and other rail industry partners with the project.
