Speedo Mick is not giving up on his 1,000 mile charity walk!

ON 10 January 2019, Speedo Mick was at the Birches Brow Boutique Guest Rooms, in Aughton, Ormskirk, with Liverpool in sight. It was a very cold morning, but 55 year old, Everton FC fan, Michael Cullen, aka Speedo Mick, was determined to set off and walk into Liverpool, continuing his incredible 1,000 mile charity walk, in aid of Leave the Light On. However, after setting off from Preston the day before, he had injured his leg. He had thought he could press on, but as he left Birches Brow, with BBC News Team, ourselves and Dave Evens aka 'The Pap' watching, he was clearly in pain. As you can see in the footage we shot, he was struggling to walk. After getting advice he headed back in. Sadly, some of the press, who were not at the location and did not check, put out that he was quitting, something that was far from the truth. After getting more advice he reluctantly agreed to get medical help, which resulted in him having to take a break from his John O'Groats to Lands End walk, if he was not to risk further injury. Reluctantly he agreed to follow the advice and is now taking a few days off, so that his calf injury can be sorted out, before heading off again from the Birches Brow, to complete the daunting task ahead

This is footage of him attempting to set off from the Birches Brow...

Later that day, after being checked over and seen by a physiotherapist, rather than letting people down, he headed into some of the schools in Maghull, to meet with people who had given him support. In the evening he made his way to the Hilton Hotel, where his walk would have should have brought him, for a press call and to greet his supporters. This was not the way he had planned to do it! At the Hilton in Liverpool he said:- "I was told today that it's not a massive tear or anything, but it seems to be a minor one. I'm gutted as I'm told it could take a week for my leg to recover, but it could be less than that. But I will never give up... I will do this..." He also added that he was overwhelmed by the support being shown.

This is footage of him attempting to set off for the press event at the Hilton Hotel.

What makes this attempt even more amazing is that up till now he has been doing this challenge without a backup car or a support team, in very poor conditions. Most people who do this challenge go fully equipped, and in summer, so this is amazing! We think this chap is a star, and we hope he reaches his fundraising target soon.

For official updates visit please follow Speedo Mick on Twitter.

As he say son his fundraising page:- "We can all make a difference in a positive way and hope you can join me in helping us make a difference with Leave The Light On. We hope to be able to give young and old the opportunity to help one another without having to worry about the financial cost."

If you can, please help Michael Cullen to do this and to hit his fund raising target. For more information about this fundraiser, please visit his Go Fund Me Page...

If you want to know more about the charity please visit:- LeaveTheLightOn.Org.UK.

It is also worth adding that the both the Birches Brow and the Hilton did not charge him for the rooms, as have so many others on his amazing walk so far.
