Remembrance Sunday - Liverpool

THESE are some amazing photographs taken and sent to us of the Remembrance Day Service in Liverpool. This was the 1st time the Service has been held outside St Gouges Hall for a number of years, due to Covid and work taking place on the road outside. The event was extremely well attended, despite the fact that the year before a Terrorist had tried to disrupt it and set off a bomb at the near by Hospital. As a result of this a request was made that no drones would be used at the proceedings or any others in the Liverpool City Region. We want to thank the photographer, John Mason for sending us these amazing images.

Southport's Hidden War Memorial Plaque

ON Remember ace Day, every year the Southport Branch of NARPO, lay a wreath at the Sunday Remembrance Service, but they also do another service, away from public eyes on the memoriam plaque for Sergeant Miller Smith. Sergeant Miller Smith was a gallant comrade who gave his life to the Glory of God his King and Country whilst taking part in an operation in September 1942 directed against a hydro-electric power station at Glomfjord, Norway, serving in a British Army Company, along with 11 other British and Norwegian troops. The force was landed from a submarine on 15 September 1942 and on the night of the 20 September 1942, they succeeded in blowing up the power station. The force then began to make its way towards the Swedish frontier, but after a short distance had been covered a German patrol made an attack, which made it necessary for the Force to split up so that each individual might have a chance of escaping. 4 members of the party managed to reach the frontier and were subsequently repatriated. The remainder including Miller Smith were captured and subsequently shot as a reprisal. What many do not know was is that Southport's Police Station has a plaque dedicated to him, within the foyer, as Sergeant Miller Smith Coldstream Guards, before World War 2 was a Constable of the Southport County Borough Police.
