Marshside Primary School receives donation to help conservation activities

MARSHSIDE Primary School has received a welcome boost to their conservation efforts, thanks to a donation from United Utilities' Community Fund.

The School, based in Southport, borders the RSPB marshland and the Triple SSSI (Site of Special Scientific Interest) coast area and so, is committed to preserving local beauty spots and waterways as much as possible.

Earlier in the year, the School carried out a survey to find out the students' views, feelings, and experiences of the natural environment. Teachers found that many students didn't understand how their actions impacted the environment, with only half having access to natural spaces outside of School trips.

With the findings concerning teachers, the School refined its curriculum to implement learning within the natural environment as a theme across all School years.

The updated curriculum ensures that the students are now exposed to more frequent field trips to investigate the local nature spots and waterways, whilst also being encouraged to participate in regular litter pickups for the benefit of healthier waters and ecosystems.

With the School keen to continue their efforts, they unfortunately were struggling to source efficient equipment for their litter picking sessions and so, enlisted the help of the United Utilities' Community Fund.

United Utilities was quick to support the School's request after hearing about their growing outdoor curriculum and commitment to conservation. The donation provided them with child-friendly litter picking equipment, which earlier this spring, was delivered to the School by United Utilities' River Rangers, followed by a group litter picking session.

Sarah Yarwood, Teacher at Marshside Primary School, commented:- "As educators, we're committed to promoting conservation education and well-being through outdoor learning. Our curricular activities aim to improve students' understanding of ecology, enhance community health and biodiversity, which is why were so passionate about all the children participating in our regular litter picking sessions. Having the right equipment is vital in making these outdoor experiences meaningful and inclusive for all our pupils. Thanks to United Utilities, we can now empower our students to take real, positive action in their local environment."

Mark Booth, Area Engagement lead for Merseyside at United Utilities, commented:- "We're thrilled to support a School that's creating such a powerful, hands-on learning experience for children. Not only will this donation help protect the Marshside area's natural beauty, but we hope it will also inspire the next generation to understand, respect, and care for their surroundings and local waterways. At United Utilities we want to work in partnership with communities to protect our water bodies for generations to come."

The United Utilities' Community Fund supports community groups whose activities:-

  • Benefit local watercourses and riverside environments.

  • Act as catalyst for improved community and environmental wellbeing.

  • Reconnect communities to riverside environments.

  • Promote sustainable drainage.

Groups can apply to the fund for up to:- £2,500 worth of support by emailing:- StakeholderRelations@UUPlc.Co.UK, with details of their request.

Bathing water season in England begins as applications for new sites re-open

THE bathing water season has officially started on:- Thursday, 15 May 2025, marking the beginning of rigorous testing of water quality from the Environment Agency at bathing sites.

Our bathing waters bring important social and health benefits to local communities and help coastal towns prosper by attracting tourists from across the UK and the world.

Throughout the season, which runs from:- 15 May 2025, until the end of September 2025, the Environment Agency will be taking more than 675 samples at designated bathing waters across North West England.

The long term trend for bathing water quality in the North West remains positive this year with 85% achieving the minimum standard of sufficient. Of these, 61% achieved the highest standards of Excellent or Good.

This also marks the re-opening of applications for new bathing waters which have been closed since October 2023 and since then, the Government has announced significant reforms to the Bathing Water Regulations to better reflect public use of iconic swimming spots. Successful sites will be announced next year.

Environment Agency Chair Alan Lovell said:- "We know just how important England's swimming spots are to people and to local economies, so our teams are out taking regular samples at bathing waters across England from today. The information from those tests helps us keep people safe, target our regulation and encourage investment to drive up water quality standards. It's part of our core commitment to protect people and the environment. We also welcome the opportunity to improve the management of bathing waters through the incoming reforms as we all want to see better bathing water quality."

Water Minister Emma Hardy said:- "Our bathing waters across the country are a great source of pride. That is why this Government is committed to protecting them. Our landmark Water Act includes:- new powers to ban bonuses for polluting water bosses and to bring criminal charges against them if they break the law. A record £104 billion in private investment has also been secured to upgrade and build new sewage pipes to help clean up our waterways for good."

The water samples are tested in labs and then the results are uploaded onto:- Swimfo, which displays regular information on water quality across all designated bathing waters to help the public make informed choices about where to swim.

After the season has ended, the sample results are used to classify each bathing water as either:- 'excellent,' 'good,' 'sufficient,' or 'poor.' Classifications are shown on:- Swimfo and on signs at the site to inform bathers of typical quality.

This comes alongside applications for new bathing waters which will be assessed against the planned core reforms, set to come into effect later this year, and include changes to designation criteria for future sites.

Prospective applicants are encouraged to submit their applications using the updated guidance to make sure new sites are designated in line with the changes to the Regulations.
