War Memorial covered in human poop

THE War Memorial in Southport Town Centre is not only a memorial for those who have died protecting the people of our nation, who can from the Town, but also its a tourist landmark. In a few days time, the Town will be getting ready for Armed Forces Day, but residents have contacted us over the last few days after poop has been found smeared in and around the war memorial along with dirty used toilet paper.  The memorial has also had abandoned baggage and other items, including food waste dumped in and around it.

A resident said:- "This is not only disrespectful of the Town's war dead, but also not only unhygienic, but dangerous to! What a look this gives tourists visiting our amazing Town. Not only are doorways of empty shops covered in mess, but also we have grown men, in full view of shoppers, pissing in doorways and on walls,  now this! We need Merseyside Police and Sefton Council to take action. It is beyond a joke. Some of these people are also shouting abuse at people as they go to the loo in full view of people walking passed. The Town's drunks and addicts have destroyed the toilets, and its damaging our reputation. Last week a group a French and Japanese tourists got hassled by people asking for money, then they saw as they discussed this in a local cafe, a chap going up to the window and relieving himself. This was 3pm in the afternoon, and on a week day!"

Another local redirect, Christina, has commented:- "So many inconsiderate people around at the moment.... Maybe the police could check CCTV and see if there are any suspects they can prosecute! If they can prosecute in London for stone piddling against a Moment, they can prosecute idiots for throwing their body waste at our monument."

A shop owner added:- "Disrespectful and a health hazard, indeed!"

An angry resident also said:- "What kind of Mindless Moron would do this? It is so revolving! Just disgusting!"

A tourist from Spain commented:- "I was told to stay clear of Southport as its rundown and full of revolving sites like this. I will not be coming back with my family next year. I can see why I was told to avoid the Town. Just a few businesses and no attractions. Plus, you see things like this!"

We have tried to make Sefton Council and Merseyside Police aware of this issue and awaiting a response.  Please do pass your thoughts on to us by emailing our Newsroom at:- News24@SouthportReporter.Com or send us a message on:- Mastodon, Facebook, or Twitter.

New Community Police Station opens on Hospital campus

A new Community Police Station based on the Alder Hey Children's healthcare campus site has officially been opened by Merseyside's Police and Crime Commissioner.

Springfield Park Community Police Station, located within the Catkin building at Alder Hey, will make officers and PCSOs from Merseyside Police's local policing team more accessible to people visiting the Hospital and living in the area.

It will also serve as a drop in point for the Local Policing Team and Response Officers, as well as Police staff; enhancing the visibility and accessibility of the Police in the area.

The opening of a community Police Station near to a Hospital is a significant step in the PCC and Merseyside Police's commitment to partnership working.

On Wednesday, 11 June 2025, the Commissioner was joined by Merseyside Police Assistant Chief Constable Jenn Wilson and Adam Bateman, Deputy Chief Executive from Alder Hey Children's NHS Foundation Trust to officially declare the Station open for business.

The opening of Springfield Community Police Station is part of the ongoing work being delivered as part of the PCCs 12 year Estate Strategy, to update Merseyside Police's Stations and facilities to locate officers and staff in the best places to serve our communities.

Merseyside's Police and Crime Commissioner, Emily Spurrell said:- "I'm delighted that we are opening the doors to Springfield Park Community Police Station; whicj is a facility that's putting community needs at the heart of policing. This new Station is a testament to the power of partnership and innovation. As the 1st Community Police Station in the Region to be based next to a Hospital, it is proof of our ongoing commitment to working with our key partners to ensure Officers and staff are accessible to the people they serve. By working closely with Alder Hey, we've created a space that not only meets the operational needs of modern policing but also provides a compassionate environment for some of the most vulnerable members of our community. We are delivering on our promise to make Merseyside Police fit to fight crime now and into the future. By replacing outdated buildings with modern, flexible facilities like this one, we're ensuring that officers and staff have the right tools and environments to do their jobs effectively—while remaining firmly rooted in the communities they serve. It's a proud moment for Merseyside and a clear demonstration of our commitment to modern, community focused policing."

The Community Police Station will be open on a regular, but not continuous basis. Surgeries will be publicised at the Station, on local billboards and through the Force's website and social media channels.

Chief Constable Serena Kennedy said:- "Alder Hey is a much loved institution in Merseyside, and we are proud to become 1 part of the wonderful services delivered there. Most importantly, the opening of Springfield Park Community Police Station will put our Officers and staff right at the heart of the community in West Derby. As the 1st Community Police Station in the Region next to a Hospital, it means we will be uniquely placed to address the needs of people visiting the Hospital and those who live locally. Families visit the Hospital often at incredibly challenging times in their lives. I am sure the presence of our Officers will enable us to offer further reassurance and practical support to those families as our NHS colleagues treat their young loved ones. I know our local and response officers and PCSOs are looking forward to being at the heart of the communities, working from a community Police Station that has the modern facilities and tools they will need to help protect and support the public."

Adam Bateman, Deputy Chief Executive from Alder Hey Children's NHS Foundation Trust said:- "The opening of the Community Police Station on Alder Hey's expanding health park campus is testament to the strong partnership Alder Hey and Merseyside Police have. The new facility demonstrates our joint commitment to working closely to best support the communities we serve. Alder Hey is passionate about ensuring children and young people are supported to live healthy and happy lives."
