Green fingered West Lancashire Schools join veg and fruit growing scheme

PUPILS from across West Lancashire will soon be able to cook meals at home using ingredients they have grown at School.  The Borough's Primary Schools were invited to take part in the fruit and vegetable monthly box subscription scheme Pot Gang, funded and supported by the Council's repairs contractor, Wates Property Services (WPS). WPS funded subscriptions for 16 Primary Schools. It is hoped being part of Pot Gang will teach children lifelong skills, including how to grow their own produce while also taking it home to enjoy with their loved ones.

Stewart Reid, Regional Managing Director at WPS, said:- "We're delighted to provide funding support for this project. We're looking forward to growing our relationships within our communities, along with the plants and vegetables!"

Councillor Vickie Cummins, Lead Member for Health and Wellbeing, said:- "Encouraging our young people to eat fresh, natural produce is important and a great way to do that is for them to take pride in growing their own ingredients. We're excited to see the fruit, vegetables and herbs these budding gardeners can produce and the delicious recipes they are then able to cook with them."

Schools taking part in the scheme are:-

  •  Newburgh Church of England Primary School.

  •  Halsall St Cuthbert's Church of England Primary School.

  •  Aughton Christ Church, CofE Voluntary Controlled Primary School.

  •  Appley Bridge All Saints Church of England Primary School.

  •  St Teresa's Catholic Primary School.

  •  Aughton St Michael's Church of England Primary School.

  •  Brookfield Park Primary School.

  •  St Joseph's Catholic Primary School, Wrightington.

  •  Burscough Bridge St John's Church of England Primary School.

  •  Burscough Village Primary School.

  •  Crawford Village Primary School.

  •  Little Digmoor Primary School.

  •  Burscough Bridge Methodist School.

  •  St John's Catholic Primary School, Burscough.

  •  Holmeswood Methodist Primary School.

  •  Rufford C Of E Primary School.

This initiative is set to cultivate not just thriving gardens, but also a deeper connection between children, their food, and their community.
