Formby Remembrance Services 2025

THREE Remembrance Services took place in Formby this year. The first being on:- Sunday, 9 November 2025, at:- Holy Trinity Church, where a Civic Service was held as normal, at:- 3 pm.  Sadly, this year the annual march to the church was cancelled as the Royal British Legion no longer have access to the Guild Hall. The that in the past went back to the Guild Hall, also was cancelled as this year the parade with have been up to the War Memorial and back again, in very heavy rain. That along with other factors like the age of the veterans who would have taken part which was the major factor in the decision meant some online who say they had come out to see the parade.

On Armistice Day, 11 November 2025, the Formby Royal British Legion held its annual Remembrance Service at the Village War Memorial. This footage was taken at the service, which is held every year along with a 2 minute silence at 11 am.  The video footage below was filmed live at this Service.

The War Memorial event was attended by representatives of the local schools and local Council members, along with both local emergency services and military representatives. The Remembrance Service is run by the Formby Royal British Legion and voluntaries from the local community. The idea to remember all those who have lost their lives in war, not just the 1st or 2nd World War.

Also on the 11 November 2025, the Formby Royal British Legion held a Service of Remembrance, in the grounds of  Our Lady of Compassion Church, for the Polish RAF Pilots who where based at RAF Woodvale, defending Merseyside during World War 2.  In total 6 men from the  Polish squadrons, notably the 308 (Krakowski) Squadron are buried in war graves at Our Lady of Compassion Church's Graveyard.

Many seem to forget the Royal Air Force had Polish and other nationalities flying for them, like those based at RAF Woodvale, from:- December 1941 to April 1942,

Please note that if you do attend, please remember the service next year, remember that it is followed by a special service within the grounds of Our Lady's Parish Church next to the Polish RAF Crew War Graves. But also remember that the car park at the Superstore is for customers and only allows 2 hours and you will be subject to a fine if you go over that 2 hours.

Did you know? The Formby War Memorial is located by the roundabout at the corner of Three Tuns Lane, within the Village Centre. Listed upon the memorial are the names of 118 Service Men, from Formby who gave their lives in the Great War. This memorial also commemorates 69 Service Men who died World War II, and the 1 residents from Formby killed whilst serving in Afghanistan.. The names and information of those who died can be found on:- IWM.Org.UK.
