Southport man is running 5km every day through whole of 2026 to raise funds for Alice's WonderDance

A man from Southport, Merseyside, Tom Iddon, is running a minimum of 5km every single day throughout 2026 to raise funds for Alice's WonderDance

The 35 year old has been inspired by the amazing efforts of Alice's Dad, Sergioe Aguiar, who is in the process of running six of the major marathons across the world.

By the end of 2026, Tom aims to have run at least 1,825km for the charity!

People can sponsor him online on:- JustGiving.Com.

Tom is being supported in his challenge by his fiancée Jo, along with:- his daughter Eva, and another little 1 on the way.

He works for Southport men's fitness and Transform Ladies Fitness, as Manager, PT and Fitness Coach.

Tom
explains:- "I have begun running every single day in 2026 a minimum of 5km each day. I have been a runner for around 5 years now and have been a member of Southport Waterloo running club for the past 2 years. I have wanted to put my running to good use for a while and didn't know how, after what happened in our local town to the amazing families in Southport in 2024. Sergio's story has really inspired me. I got talking to Sergio and David Broughton, at local parkruns in recent months and just speaking to these 2 it made me want to do something to help Alice's WonderDance. With the help of Sarah, a friend of the family, we managed to get a Just Giving page together and get things rolling. I'm really excited and determined to take on this challenge! Although it's extremely difficult and not something to be taken lightly, I am really determined to complete this and raise as much money as possible for this amazing cause. I wanted to do something to challenge myself and push myself further. Please donate anything you can to this amazing charity!"

Alice's WonderDance is a foundation created and inspired by the name of Alice Da Silva Aguiar.

Alice's family
said:- "We move forward with purpose, spreading the same energy, magic and love that Alice brought to every space she danced in. We believe dance is more than movement, it's freedom, creativity, connection, and joy. Our work removes barriers so that every child can access dance, explore their passion, and grow through movement in a safe, empowering space."

Staff at 5 Colleges across Liverpool and Merseyside to strike for better pay and working conditions

THE College Union (UCU) say College bosses have refused to make a fair offer over pay and working conditions, so its members at:- Hugh Baird College, City of Liverpool College, St Helen's College, Knowsley Community College and Wirral Metropolitan College, will begin 3 days of strike action this week.

UCU members will be on strike on:-

  • Wednesday, 14 January 2026.

  • Thursday, 15 January 2026.

  • Friday, 16 January 2026.

Staff will be on picket lines at all 5 colleges on each day of action.

Striking staff from across England will rally at the Emmanuel Centre, in Westminster, from:- 12pm, on:- Friday, 16 January 2026.

UCU, alongside its sister unions NEU, GMB, UNISON and Unite, is calling for a New Deal for FE, including:- pay parity with schoolteachers, national workload agreements and a binding national bargaining framework.

The union is pressing employers to work with them to implement meaningful sectoral bargaining so further education can avoid the cycle of strike ballots and disruption over the past few years.

Employer body, the Association of Colleges (AoC), recommended a pay uplift of 4% but colleges do not have to follow it, and many have failed to do so in previous pay rounds. The average College Teacher earns:- £9,000 less than their counterparts in Schools.

UCU General Secretary Jo Grady
said::- "Industrial action is a last resort for our members, but staff at colleges across Liverpool and Merseyside have been left with no choice. There is still time for management at these 5 colleges to make a fair offer that helps close the pay gap between:- School and College teachers. Our demands are reasonable, and management needs to look at those colleges that worked with us to settle their disputes. Employers must now agree to meaningful sectoral bargaining so further education can avoid the cycle of strike ballots and disruption that we have seen over the past few years."
