Liverpool City Region has been announced as a host for the 2027 Tour de France

AMAZING sporting news for the Liverpool City Region was announced on 15 January 2026. The announcement started with the iconic group of 5 life sized bronze statues of The Beatles walking together on a paved area in Liverpool, being adorned with a bright yellow scarf and 2 people standing on either side. The 2 people where Christian Prudhomme and Chris Boardman, who were bring photograph touching the outer figures, but what was it all about? Well, it was in fact a photo shoot for an historic announcement by the Tour de France race organisers

This week cycling fans got to hear that Merseyside has been selected to host the finish of stage 2 of the men’s event on:- Saturday, 3 July 2027.  Paul Bush, Managing Director, Grand Départ GB 2027, commented:- "Revealing the full routes of these opening stages is a huge moment for everyone involved and my thanks to all our partners. The UK has hosted unforgettable Grand Départs before, but 2027 will be bigger than anything we've seen; with both the men’s and women’s pelotons starting here together for the historic very first time. This will be a:- 'moment for the Nation' and is a once in a generation opportunity to inspire more people to experience the joy and freedom of cycling."

Competitors will race from the Cumbrian Town of:- Keswick, through Lancashire eventually speeding into the boroughs of:- Knowsley and St Helens, before finishing the stage in a super sprint along Liverpool’s iconic waterfront!

The full routes for both the men’s and women’s races were revealed as 10 host Towns and Cities were illuminated simultaneously in a nationwide:- ‘Tour de Skies’ moment, marking the next major milestone on the road to the:- '2027 Grand Départs,' which is set to be the largest free sporting spectacle in British Cycling history.

The men’s 'Tour de France' will begin in Edinburgh, on:- Friday, 2 July 2027, with the opening stage finishing in:- Carlisle, before stage 2 travels from:- Keswick to finish on:- The Strand, in Liverpool's City Centre.

That night, to celebrate the announcement, all start and finish venues were lit up simultaneously, with a yellow beam illuminating the sky from the City’s:- Three Graces, St George’s Dock building and the Mersey Tunnels.

The announcement will also present a huge multi million pound boost to the Liverpool City Region Tourism Economy and will put a timely spotlight on the region’s active travel programme, which is delivering more than:- 600km of new cycling and walking routes.

Chris Boardman, multiple Yellow Jersey Holder on the tour and now National Commissioner at Active Travel England, has gone on record saying:- "I never thought I’d see the world’s biggest race finishing just 8 miles from my home, on roads I know so well! It will be an incredible spectacle!!! The route to Liverpool's iconic waterfront; starting in the Lake District and rolling through Lancashire; promises tough, hilly and spectacular racing. The beauty of cycling is that it’s free to watch and open to everyone. Few sports let you get this close to the stars or offer such versatility; from getting to work or school to bringing the whole country together. That's why I love cycling, and why I’m thrilled to see the Tour coming to my back yard."

The arrival of the:- 'Tour De France' completes an impressive hat tick of global sporting events coming to the Liverpool City Region over the next few years, with:- 'The Open' to be staged at:- Royal Birkdale this year, in July and the:- UEFA EURO 2028 Championships to be hosted at:- Everton FC’s stadium in 2028.

Hosting the largest free to watch sporting event in British history will create an incredible buzz around Liverpool, providing the opportunity for our residents and visitors to experience something truly special. The ‘super sprint’ along the Strand to mark the end of stage 2's uniquely set in the shadow of our world famous Three Graces; promises to be a real iconic moment in Tour history. But the benefits to our residents and communities will last long beyond the race; it will further boost our visitor economy, provide unique experiences to residents of all ages through volunteering opportunities, and long term community initiatives will be rolled out as part of a new social impact programme."

Back in 2012 we were proud to host the Tour of Britain in the borough; which I know ignited a real passion for cycling, so I think the news about the Tour De France will be very warmly welcomed by residents. What a fantastic opportunity for people to catch a glimpse of the peloton and have the chance to witness this world famous sporting spectacle right here in Knowsley."

Alongside the route announcement, organisers also revealed Joy, the social impact programme at the heart of the 2027 Grand Départ, that aims to tackle inactivity and improve mental wellbeing, support communities to thrive, and to make Britain more productive and prosperous.

6 core programmes will be rolled out across the home nations, with organisers working collaboratively with Governments, Local Councils, core delivery partners and community representatives to create opportunities for young people to develop their skills, break down barriers for girls in sport, and to showcase community culture through the voices of Britain.

Additionally, British Cycling will look to recruit more than:- 7,000 volunteers for the Grand Départ, inviting people across the UK to play a hands on role in delivering the world’s biggest free to watch sporting event. Thousands of opportunities will be available across route operations, spectator support and community engagement, offering people of all ages the chance to be part of Tour history, with more details to be announced when the programme is launched in the spring.

New study highlights Mersey Tidal Power’s potential to protect communities from flooding

AS work continues on building the business case required for schemes of national public interest, new studies have revealed how the world’s largest tidal power project on the River Mersey would protect communities and wildlife habitats from flooding.

Detailed analysis of updated Environment Agency flood maps shows how the proposed Mersey Tidal Power project would not only provide enough clean energy to power hundreds of thousands of homes for 120 years but would also protect homes and businesses from rising sea levels.

As a result, Liverpool City Region Combined Authority has announced a major evolution of the project – transforming it from a clean energy scheme into a dual-purpose infrastructure project that will offer flood protection.

The change, which the Combined Authority will be asked to approve at its:- 23 January 2026 meeting, follows detailed studies which show the Mersey estuary faces significant risk from sea level rise. A tidal barrage could play a critical role in mitigating these risks, safeguarding homes, businesses, and vital infrastructure across the Region.

Originally conceived as a renewable energy project to harness tidal power from the River Mersey, the tidal barrage scheme now aims to deliver a dual benefit:- generating up to 1 giga watt of low-carbon electricity and providing long term flood protection. This aligns with Liverpool City Region’s Climate Action Plan and resilience strategy.

Liverpool City Region Mayor Steve Rotheram said:- “Mersey Tidal Power has the potential to deliver clean, predictable energy for up to 120 years, create thousands of skilled green jobs and apprenticeships, and cement our place as Britain’s Renewable Energy Coast. But as we further shape these plans, we’re also being honest about the reality we face. Rising sea levels are already changing our coastline, and we must adapt. A tidal barrage on the Mersey could become a major line of defence – protecting homes, businesses and vital infrastructure, while setting a new national example for how we respond to climate change."

He continued:- “The Thames in London already has flood defences, and this is now a consideration for areas the Mersey runs through. Because this is about far more than generating energy; it’s about future proofing our Region. By building flood protection into its design, we’re tackling two of the defining challenges of our time:- cutting carbon emissions and strengthening our resilience to climate change. Quite simply, the case for tidal power has never been clearer; for our economy, our communities and our planet.”

Councillor Anthony Burns, Cabinet Member for Net Zero, added:- "The Mersey Tidal Power Project is a once-in-a-generation opportunity to deliver clean, affordable energy while protecting our communities from the impacts of climate change. It’s an iconic solution that will benefit our Region for decades to come."

The project, classified as a Nationally Significant Infrastructure Project under the Planning Act 2008, is currently in Phase 4 of development, which includes:- environmental assessments, engineering design, and preparation for a Development Consent Order submission. While the full business case is now expected in 2030, the Combined Authority continues to work with Government and partners to accelerate progress.

With a projected operational life of 120 years, the Mersey Tidal Power Project will help protect against sea level rise of 0.8m to 1.2m by 2150, making it a long-term solution for both clean energy and climate resilience.
