Merseyside Schools and community groups urged to apply for Tesco grants to boost children's access to healthy food

SCHOOLS and community groups across Merseyside are being encouraged to apply for funding through Tesco, as the retailer looks to support more local projects helping children and young people access healthy, nutritious food.

The community grant scheme awards up to:- £1,500, with shortlisted projects going forward to a customer vote in participating Tesco stores. Shoppers receive a blue token and can vote by placing it in the in store unit for the cause they want to support. Each funding round features 3 local projects, with grants awarded based on the number of tokens received.

This year, Tesco is particularly keen to hear from initiatives with a clear food focus, including:- breakfast clubs, holiday food provision, access to healthy snacks for youth groups, community pantries, cookery and nutrition sessions, and food growing projects that help children learn where food comes from.

The call for applications comes as the latest Government diet survey shows that fewer than:- 1 in 10 children and young people aged:- 11 to 18 meet the recommended 5 a day, with:- 11 to 18 year olds eating an average of around:- 2.9 portions of fruit and vegetables per day. Tesco believes every child should have the opportunity to enjoy healthy food and is committed to backing practical projects that make a difference locally.

Claire De Silva, Head of Community, at Tesco, said:- "Every child deserves the chance to enjoy healthy food and build the foundations for a healthier future, we want to support the brilliant Schools and community groups in Merseyside helping children and young people access nutritious food. Whether that's a breakfast club, a pantry, cookery sessions or a project that helps children grow and try new foods, we'd encourage local organisations to apply, and we'd love shoppers to get involved when the customer vote comes to their local store."

Already in Merseyside, a number of local causes have benefited from the Stronger Starts blue token initiative, helping to improve children's access to healthier food and nutrition education, including:- St Anne's Catholic Primary School in Liverpool.

Gill Murphy, Headteacher at St Anne's Catholic Primary School, said:- "The Tesco Stronger Starts grant made a real difference for our School. Thanks to the funding, we were able to introduce a healthy snack bar initiative for our pupils, providing a regular supply of fresh fruit and nutritious snacks during their morning break. Every day, children could enjoy apples, bananas, oranges, grapes, and other healthy snack options like oat bars and rice cakes, helping to promote healthy eating habits and giving them the energy to engage fully in their lessons. The customer vote gave the whole initiative a real lift too. We'd strongly encourage other groups and Schools in Merseyside to apply; the funding and local support have made a genuinely positive impact."

Liverpool A&E waits of over 110 hours recorded in 2025

A Freedom of Information request by the Liberal Democrats reveals the shocking crisis in our NHS, with the average Hospital trust now seeing nearly 3,000 patients wait more than 24 hours in A&E each year.

University Hospital of Liverpool recorded agonisingly long waiting times in A&E, with the longest wait for a patient taking over:- 110 hours last year. In 12 months alone, over:- 11,148 patients waited over 24 hours in the University Hospital of Liverpool A&E.

Liverpool Lib Dems have been sounding the warning alarm about the City's Hospitals and health services buckling under the years of Conservative cuts and inaction by the Labour Government. They have repeatedly called for urgent action to cut GP wait times and end the corridor care crisis.

The Liberal Democrats have set out a:- £1.5bn plan to end corridor care and 12 hour waits within a year. Under their plans:- 6,000 more beds would be made available through investment in:- social care, supporting carers and Hospices and boosting step down care so that thousands more people can leave Hospital each week. The party would also secure:- 8,000 extra GPs so that every patient can be seen within a week or 24 hours if urgent, so fewer people turn to A&E in desperation.

Commenting, Leader of the Liverpool Lib Dems, Cllr Carl Cashman said:- "Patients across Liverpool are waiting agonisingly long hours in A&E for the care they need. It's completely disgraceful, and this Labour Government should hang their heads in shame. The Conservatives ran our NHS into the ground, and this Labour Government has allowed the crisis to get even worse. Enough is enough. Liverpool deserves better.  The crisis in our NHS cannot be ignored any longer, it is putting patients at risk. Liberal Democrats have a proper plan to end the corridor care crisis, and we want to see an urgent change in the law so the Labour Government can be held accountable if they continue to let long A&E waits spiral."
