Edge Hill University and Shakespeare North unlock the:- 'secret to happiness' in youth performance

EDGE Hill University's pioneering mental health project Arts4Us has joined forces with Shakespeare North Playhouse to debut a showcase exploring heritage, creativity and wellbeing, led by young people.

'Shakespeare, Youth and the Secret to Human Happiness,'
designed for anyone interested in creative health, youth wellbeing and community arts. It will take place on:- Wednesday, 1 April 2026, at the iconic Shakespeare North Playhouse. The unique, free event will blend live performance, academic research and interactive discussion to address the most pressing mental health challenges facing young people today.

Arts4Us  is a research project designed to support the mental health of children and young people aged:- 9 to 13 using arts and arts therapies. As the largest project of its kind in the UK, Arts4Us is funded by the Arts and Humanities Research Council (AHRC), part of UK Research and Innovation (UKRI), under the mobilising community assets to tackle health inequalities, and supported by the Jameel Arts and Health Lab.

The project empowers children with mental health challenges to access creative activities that improve their wellbeing.

Professor Vicky Karkou, Arts4Us
Project Lead and Director of Edge Hill's Research Centre for Arts and Wellbeing, said:- "The contribution of the arts to the mental health of children and young people is substantial, deserving time, commitment and resources. In this collaborative event organised by Edge Hill University and Shakespeare North we are saying that this contribution is not only an intuitive connection, but it is underpinned by science and research."

Christopher Bailey,
the long standing Lead of the Arts and Health Office at the World Health Organization (WHO), Co-Founder of the Jameel Arts and Health Lab explained:- "This theme is not a recent invention; it has been explored over time through Shakespearean texts and plays as the co-produced performance will show. And finally, and most importantly, we are saying that young people are central in voicing their need to use the arts to:- express, explore and address burning issues they are faced with."

Christopher Bailey, who since last month has joined Edge Hill University as an honorary fellow for the Research Centre for Arts and Wellbeing, will perform, alongside renowned creatives Ashleigh Nugent and Ben Crystal. Joining them on stage will be students from the Young Arts4Us Panel, performing themes inspired by the Shakespearean canon to reveal universal truths about human happiness.

The evening will conclude with a panel discussion hosted by Lisa Allen, CEO of Shakespeare North Playhouse, featuring:-

  • Dr Justin Varney Bennet, Regional Director of Public Health for the South West of England.

  • Professor Sandeep Ranote, Clinical Director for Mental Health, NHS Greater Manchester Integrated Care Board.

  • Members of the Young Arts4Us Panel.

Lisa Allen, CEO of Shakespeare North Playhouse, said:- "Creativity has the power to connect and inspire hope, making the arts vital for:- supporting wellbeing, building confidence, and developing the skills to navigate life. Through events like this, we create space for meaningful dialogue between:- young people and leaders across sectors, working together to improve mental wellbeing. Shakespeare's stories remind us of what it means to be human; full of humour and empathy, they explore experiences everyone can relate to which can be a powerful source of happiness."

Edge Hill University and Shakespeare North Playhouse have been in partnership since 2024; the collaboration was built to drive social impact and foster place-based change by bringing together the strengths of both organisations.

Arts4Us is a massive collaborative effort involving the:- University of Salford, the University of Liverpool, Alder Hey Children's Hospital Trust, and the Mersey Care, Lancashire and South Cumbria NHS Foundation Trusts, alongside various Schools and social care organisations.

The event is free to attend, book your place now by visiting:- ShakespeareNorthPlayhouse.Co.UK.

Drishti Point to open new yoga studio in Wayfarers Arcade in Southport

A brand new yoga studio is getting ready to open inside:- Wayfarers Arcade, in Southport, this April! Drishti Point, owned by Sue Jones, will occupy the 1st floor unit previously occupied by Dad's Guitars and by Kernaghan Books before that.

The new studio will offer a quiet space inside a beautiful Victorian Arcade which has been welcoming visitors since:- 1898; perfect for yoga, meditation and mindfulness!

Sue already runs a number of successful classes in Southport and has been eager to find the perfect premises to accommodate her growing demand.

Lots of hard work is taking place behind the scenes to get everything ready by Sue and her husband Steve. Fresh paint is being applied to the walls, the ceiling has been re-plastered, window vinyls are in place and curtains have been fitted, as the space is transformed.

Sue will be starting with a soft launch of relaxing Yoga Nidra sessions, before introducing more classes and officially celebrating the opening in May 2026.

Keep an eye on the Wayfarers Arcade social media pages for regular updates as the studio comes together.

Sue's teaching style focuses on gentle Hatha Yoga, moving at a relaxed pace and guiding you through each stage so you can practise at the level that feels right for you.

Classes will include:-

  • Hatha Yoga; a classic, gentle practice focusing on posture, breath and balance.

  • Chair Yoga; perfect for those with limited mobility or looking for a more supported practice.

  • Pranayama & Meditation; breathing techniques and meditation to calm the mind and reduce stress.

  • Yoga Nidra; a deeply relaxing guided:- "yogic sleep" meditation.

  • Angelic Reiki; a calming spiritual healing practice.

Whether you're completely new to yoga or returning to your mat, there will be a welcoming space for you at Drishti Point at Wayfarers Arcade.

Sue's journey to opening her own yoga studio has been an inspiring one. After 32 years working in financial services, starting at Barclays Bank at just 16 and progressing to senior management roles at Santander, Sue decided it was time to focus on something she had always loved; yoga.

At 58, she took on the challenge of training to become a Teacher, achieving her 500-hour qualification with the British Wheel of Yoga and becoming a Master Angelic Reiki practitioner.

Over the past 3 years she has built a thriving yoga community in Southport, teaching classes for U3A members and helping people discover the benefits of gentle, accessible yoga. Now she's bringing that passion to her very own studio here at Wayfarers Arcade.

Sue Jones
said:- "We have been working hard to get everything ready! I am hoping to be open for:- Tuesday, 7 April 2026, ahead of a big launch event on:- Saturday, 2 May 2026. I am in Rock Choir, and I would love it if they were able to come along and sing on the day! I have been teaching my yoga classes from a number of different places, moving my equipment from place to place. The number of people coming to my sessions has grown and grown! I wanted to find 1 place I could call home, and have been waiting a while to find the perfect spot. When I heard about this unit at Wayfarers Arcade, I thought it would be too expensive, but that wasn't the case at all. This is such a beautiful arcade to be in. It's brilliant that we will be situated upstairs from the Wayfarers Tea Room and the Pudding & Pie cafe, so people can come to me for yoga and then pop downstairs for a coffee or some lunch. It will be great for attracting more people into the arcade and adding even more life and vibrancy. I have some very nice neighbours in here, who have been very supportive. There are some fabulous local independent businesses in Wayfarers. I have always loved yoga. I thought about giving it a go and thought:- 'can I do this?' I completed 500 hours of training over 3 years and have been really inspired by my good friend, Christine Howorth from Southport U3A. She encouraged:- me to start out. Now I run 9 yoga classes with Southport U3A members! I needed a new place to be based and found Wayfarers Arcade. I love it to bits. It's perfect for what I want."
