Council clamps down on noisy neighbour after complaints

FOLLOWING repeated noise complaints about a property, Liverpool City Council has successfully seized a cache of devices that had been used to make excessive noise over a prolonged period.

The Council, working alongside Merseyside Police, executed a warrant at a residence on:- Albany Road, L9 on:- Thursday, 23 April 2026.

Nearby residents had raised concerns about excessively loud music being played by a:- 66 year old occupant.

Despite multiple warnings issued under the:- 'Environmental Protection Act,' the noise continued, leaving others distressed and unable to enjoy peace within their homes.

After successfully applying for a warrant, Officers were able to seize a range of equipment that had been used to create noise. The items removed from:- The property included:- televisions, speakers, laptops, mobile phones, and drum kits.

Under the Environmental Protection Act, local authorities have powers to take away noise making equipment to prevent further nuisance.

The occupier in question has been given 6 months to pay a substantial fine in order to get their goods back.

If this is not paid within the timeframe, the items will be disposed of.

People can report noise or nuisance complaints on the Liverpool City Council website.

Councillor Harry Doyle, Cabinet Member for Health, Wellbeing and Culture said:- "Everyone deserves to enjoy peace and quiet in their own homes. Individuals making persistent, excessive noise are being inconsiderate of those around them. This action is always a last resort, but it is 1 that we're not afraid to take if warnings are repeatedly ignored. The wellbeing of local residents is important to us, and we will take firm action with those who fail to comply with the law."

Neighbourhood Inspector at Merseyside Police, Sean Harrison said:- "We understand the impact that nuisance noise can have in our communities, and we will always look to support the Council with their enforcement activity. Having to tolerate constant or intermittent noise can cause exhaustion, isolation and helplessness for members of our community. Sometimes, these issues can be resolved amicably, or through a compromise. On other occasions, the Local Authority will need to undertake enforcement and where necessary, get support from Neighbourhood Policing Teams. If you feel you can't talk to the people involved, or they won't listen, contact the Environmental Health team at your Local Council; they'll be able to give you advice on the next steps."

North West shoplifting statistics, Usdaw urges Labour to continue to tackle retail crime

RETAIL trade union Usdaw has welcomed the 1st overall decrease in shoplifting since the Covid Pandemic, as reported in today's Police recorded crime statistics for England and Wales, showing that in 2025, there was a 1% decrease in shoplifting across the 2 nations.

The Office for National Statistics released figures today, showing an 8% overall decrease in shoplifting incidents across the North West. Individual statistics for the Region's constabulary areas are as follows:-

  • Cheshire -15%.

  • Cumbria +3%.

  • Greater Manchester -11%.

  • Lancashire -11%.

  • Merseyside +3%.

Usdaw's annual survey of nearly 9,000 retail staff showed that over ¾ had suffered verbal abuse and far too many had been threatened or assaulted. ⅔ of respondents said that incidents of violence, threats and abuse they had experienced were triggered by shop theft or armed robbery.

Joanne Thomas, Usdaw General Secretary says:- "Retail crime remains at very high levels, as demonstrated by these latest Police recorded crime statistics for the North West. While there has been a welcome small decrease across last year, the fact is retail crime continues to be a significant issue for the sector and, particularly, staff. Usdaw's last survey found that this is in no way a victimless crime, with ⅔ of attacks on retail staff being triggered by theft or armed robbery. Having to deal with repeated and persistent offences can cause issues beyond the theft itself, like anxiety, fear and physical harm to retail workers. We have campaigned along with many retail employers for substantial legislative measures to combat this growing problem, and we are pleased that the Government's Crime and Policing Bill has almost completed its passage through Parliament. The Conservatives persistently refused to legislate to protect retail workers and effectively provided an open invitation to retail criminals. Labour immediately set about tackling the issue and we are now starting to see the results of their investment in policing and funding for more uniformed Officer patrols in shopping areas. The Bill delivers a much-needed protection of retail workers' law; ends the indefensible £200 threshold for prosecuting shoplifters and introduces Respect Orders for offenders. Labour has also started the process of reforming Police services to put a greater focus on local crime and provide a Local Policing Guarantee. It is our hope that these new measures will help give retail workers the respect they deserve."
