Local Elections - Liverpool City Region

THE Local Elections took place on:- Thursday, 7 May 2026 all over the nation. This has been a major hit for Labour nationally and on Merseyside, Reform has become a serious threat to all the established parties, as they have nationally. It was also a good day for Liberal Democrats on Merseyside, becoming the 2nd biggest party in Sefton. Overall it has not been 100% successful for Reform, especially in Sefton. Following the Reform Party's seismic gains, on Merseyside, they have now lost a newly elected Councillor in Sefton after Mr Farage, on Friday 8 May 2026, said that Councillor Jay Cooper was:- "not welcome" leading to him to quit the party. Councillor Cooper, hit nation headlines after it was found that he had claimed the Holocaust was a:- "hoax," forcing him to apologise for his comments. The election has also led to Labour's Liverpool City Region Mayor Steve Rotherham lending his support the Labour Manchester City Region Mayor Andy Burnham's bid to become a Member of Parliament again and possibly stand for the leadership of the Labour Party.

These are the results from Merseyside...

In what was a very unusual election,
Sefton Metropolitan Borough Council held a full local election with all 66 seats contested. While predictions and partial data have appeared in various reports in the run up to the election, the definitive makeup of the Council has now changed. Both Labour and Liberal Democrats have taken the biggest stakes, with Labour clinging on to be the biggest party within Sefton by a narrow margin with 35 seats. The Liberal Democrats have gaining new seats, doing far better than expected, as did the Green Party. It's been a bad day for the Conservative who lost all 3 seats. But at Aintree Racecourse Reform failed to gallop ahead as they have across the rest of the country, but have made they significant shock waves.

This is the new shape of Sefton Council by party:-
  • The Labour Party have:- 36 seats, with:- 30% of the votes.
  • Liberal Democrats have:- 17 seats, with:- 16% of the votes.

In what was a historic shift for St Helens Borough Council, Reform UK has seized overall control. As the votes were counted on:- Friday, 8 May 2026, it became clear that the political landscape of the borough had been fundamentally altered, with Reform securing:- 34 of the 46 seats contested. The election saw:- 51,751 votes cast, representing a turnout of:- 38.5%.

The final results left the traditional major parties with significantly reduced representation, as Labour secured only 2 seats and the Conservatives just 1. Meanwhile, the Liberal Democrats, the Newton-le-Willows Independents, and the Rainhill Independents each maintained a presence on the Council with 3 seats apiece.

Reform’s path to a majority was built on a series of clean sweeps across multiple wards. In Moss Bank, candidates:- Edgerton, Kent, and Styles took all 3 seats, while in Bold and Lea Green, Egbike, Hawley, and Hitchen mirrored that success. Similar dominant performances were seen in:- Parr, Billinge and Seneley Green, and West Park, where Reform candidates consistently outperformed their Labour and Green rivals. In Thatto Heath, Beck
, Benyon, and Long secured their seats despite a spirited challenge from:- Labour’s Charlton and Hattersley.

The results in Sutton North West and Sutton South East further cemented Reform's night, with A Johnson, M Johnson, Moss, and Pinnington all elected. The party also made significant gains in Windle and Blackbrook, taking all available seats in both wards. Even in traditionally contested areas like Rainford, Reform’s Corden topped the poll, though the ward provided a solitary bright spot for the Conservatives as Mussell secured the party’s only seat on the council.

Independent groups maintained their strongholds in specific pockets of the borough. The Rainhill Independents—Dunn, Greaves, and Tasker, retained full control of their ward with a commanding lead, while the Newton-le-Willows Independents secured a triple victory in Newton-le-Willows West through Collier, Maguire, and Smith.

Labour’s presence was largely relegated to Newton-le-Willows East, where Laird and Mills managed to hold their seats alongside Reform’s Woodward. The Liberal Democrats also showed localized strength in Eccleston, where:- Cass, Haw, and Pearl successfully defended all three seats against Reform and Green challengers.

As the verification and counting concluded, the final tally confirmed a new era for St Helens, with Reform’s 34 seats granting them a comfortable mandate to lead the Council for the coming term.

Within Knowsley the political lansscape has also shifted significantly on:- Friday, 8 May 2026, as counting concluded at the Knowsley Leisure and Culture Park, in Huyton. Mirroring recent trends in St Helens, the borough saw a notable surge in support for Reform UK, who secured several key seats across the Region. Overall engagement saw a marked improvement compared to previous years, with a total turnout of:- 28.63%, a healthy increase from the:- 21.48% recorded in 2024.

The day began with the 1st results arriving just after:- 12:15, setting a diverse tone for the afternoon. In Cherryfield, Dr David Hitchmough took the seat as an Independent with:- 628 votes, narrowly ahead of Reform UK’s Josie Annesley who secured 605. Meanwhile, the Liberal Democrats found success in Prescot North, where Frances Wynn was elected with:- 1,059 votes. The Green Party also made early gains in:- Prescot South, as Kai Taylor secured a decisive:- 1,212 votes, while Labour maintained a presence in Swanside with Colin Dever being returned to office with:- 1,187 votes.

As the afternoon progressed, the momentum for Reform UK became increasingly evident. In Stockbridge, Josh Culley took the seat with 802 votes, while David Gilbertson claimed victory in Whiston and Cronton with:- 920 votes. Brian Beddows added to the Reform UK tally in:- Halewood North, winning a closely contested race with:- 765 votes. Independent candidates also fared well in this midday, with:- Brian Johns securing Whitefield with:- 1,006 votes and Steve Guy taking Shevington with:- 870 votes.

By 13:15, a further 5 wards had declared, further complicating the political map. The Green Party celebrated victories in St Gabriels, where Cath Golding won with:- 958 votes, and in Page Moss, where Ria Rembadi was elected with:- 703 votes. In Halewood South, Independent Joanne Harvey achieved a significant win with:- 1,204 votes. Labour saw success in St Michaels, where Matt Costello was elected with:- 862 votes, and in Roby, where the party secured both available seats; Kevin Bannon and Gary See were elected with:- 1,237 and 959 votes respectively in the ward which saw the day’s highest turnout at:- 37.7%.

The final declaration of the day came from:- Northwood, where Alexander Hitchmough secured another seat for Reform UK with:- 849 votes, defeating Labour’s Marie Roughley. This final result confirmed a day of significant change for Knowsley, defined by a move away from traditional party lines and a surge in support for both:- Reform UK and Independent candidates
