THE 1st ever Southport Charity Ball has raised an impressive:- £13,863.57 for Elsie’s Story and Southport Soup Kitchen. Dave and Jenni Stancombe from:- Elsie’s Story and Marie Buchanan from:- Southport Soup Kitchen, were at:- Southport and Birkdale Sports Club (S&B) as they spoke movingly about the moving reasons that drive their charities and the huge impact they have on our community.

Special guests include Sergio and Alexandra Aguiar, just days after:- David and Sergio had completed the 2026 London Marathon together.

The Southport Charity Ball was organised by Andrew and Celine Carney and a team of organisers from S&B and Southport Rugby Club.

Two of the town’s major sports clubs have teamed up this year for a year of fundraising and awareness for Elsie’s Story and Southport Soup Kitchen with more planned throughout 2026; keep an eye on their social media pages and on Stand Up For Southport for more details.

Andrew Carney said:- “The original target from the Southport Charity Ball was to donate £1,750 to each charity so this is a brilliant result. It was a wonderful evening full of emotion, laughter, tears and joy. Our night saw 2 fabulous local charities and 2 fantastic clubs coming together to raise awareness and much needed funds. I am very proud of our team for working so hard to ensure a successful evening.”

More events coming up include the:- 'Southport Colour Run' that is due to be held on:- 6 June 2026; the Inter Club Cricket match on 31 August 2026; the September Harvest Festival; along with member fundraising events such as marathons, coast to coast bike rides and more.

Local businesses generously donated prizes for an auction, a silent auction and a raffle, including:- a beautiful pair of diamond ear-rings donated by David Search Jewellers and valued at:- £2,500, with proceedings excellently hosted by Bill Woolland.

2 amazing women stood up to represent their charities on a truly emotional evening - Jenni Stancombe from Elsie’s Story and Marie Buchanan from Southport Soup Kitchen.

Jenni Stancombe told the audience:- “I am Jen. I am the founder of Elsie’s Story but more importantly I am the proud Mum of Elsie. Our charity was created in memory of our daughter Elsie Dot Stancombe, who we lost in July 2024. Elsie was the most caring, joyful and generous little girl, full of love, energy, and kindness for everyone around her. After we lost her, we knew that what happened to Elsie would never define her. But what would define her was the love she gave, the warmth she radiated and the good she continues to inspire. Elsie was caring, thoughtful and full of empathy for others. And I know without questions what she would have wanted."

She continued:- “She would have wanted to help other children. She would have wanted them to feel safe, happy and included. She would have wanted her story to mean something, to bring comfort, create opportunity, to make a difference to those who need it most. That will be Elsie’s Story. A story about kindness, love and positivity. That promise is how Elsie’s Story charitable trust began. A promise that her story would continue, And as her Mum and Dad, we have to do this for her. Our purpose is to support children and families who need it most, and to bring smiles, hope and togetherness into our community.”

Jenni Stancombe also spoke powerfully about the work being done by Southport Soup Kitchen.

She said:- “Southport Soup Kitchen is, I believe, a true hidden gem in our community. Today they provide over 7,000 meals each year to people in our community. Buit it’s so much more than just hot meals. They provide toiletries, warm clothing, a listening ear, and just as importantly, they offer kindness, dignity and a sense of belonging. Marie and her team work tirelessly to support people.”

Southport & Birkdale Sports Club and Southport Rugby Club are doing all they can this year to support Elsie’s Story and Southport Soup Kitchen.

While their missions differ, both organisations share a common purpose:- offering care, compassion, and practical support to children, families, and vulnerable individuals when they need it most.

Both S&B and Southport Rugby Club want to achieve a meaningful local impact, directing support to vulnerable people through 2 good causes with a very strong community connection.

Independent Chair leads 1st meeting focused on enhancing scrutiny of VAWG cases

A new Independent Chair appointed by Merseyside’s Police and Crime Commissioner has led her 1st Violence Against Women and Girls (VAWG) Scrutiny Panel today, marking an important step in strengthening oversight and accountability in how cases are handled across the Region.

Lynn Collins has been appointed by Emily Spurrell to chair the panel with the aim of further enhancing scrutiny of VAWG cases by reviewing anonymised cases to assess whether decisions were appropriate, identify opportunities for improvement and make practical recommendations to strengthen future investigations and outcomes.

Made up of key partners across the public and specialist support sector, the VAWG Scrutiny Panel examines cases where the police have taken a decision of No Further Action (NFA) due to insufficient evidence or when a victim does not wish to pursue the case (Outcome 15 and 16 cases).

This process is designed to help identify areas for learning, support improvements in policing practice and build greater public confidence.

Lynn was appointed earlier this year following an open recruitment process announced by the PCC as part of her ongoing work to continuously improve how Merseyside Police responds to gender based crimes and chaired her 1st meeting today (Tuesday, 19 May 2026).

She is currently Director of Representation and Organising at the Royal College of Midwives. She previously served as Equalities and Inclusion Advisor at the Liverpool City Region Combined Authority and to Mayor Steve Rotherham, where she helped establish Equality Panels and led community consultations. She was also Regional Secretary for the TUC North West, representing 800,000 workers across 48 trade unions.

Appointing an independent Chair is another step forward in the PCC’s work to Take Action against Violence against Women and Girls, particularly by increasing transparency and accountability in how cases are investigated and identifying where more could be done to bring perpetrators to justice.

Merseyside Police and Crime Commissioner Emily Spurrell said:- “Violence against women and girls continues to have a devastating impact on far too many lives, and we are determined to do everything we can to improve both the response and the outcomes for victims. Bringing in an Independent Chair to lead this scrutiny panel ensures there is strong, external oversight of how these difficult cases are handled. I’m really pleased to have Lynn on board. She brings a wealth of experience in equalities and a clear passion for addressing injustice. I hope her appointment demonstrates our ongoing commitment to transparency, accountability and continuous improvement. These panels are designed to help us better understand where more could have been done, learn from those cases and make meaningful changes so victims can have greater confidence in the system.”

Independent Chair of the VAWG Scrutiny Panel Lynn Collins said:- “Throughout my career, I have been committed to challenging inequality and supporting women and girls, so I am proud to take on this role. Leading my 1st panel has highlighted just how important it is to look closely at these cases, ask the right questions and ensure every opportunity for learning is identified. Independent scrutiny plays a vital role in strengthening the response to violence against women and girls, and I am committed to working with partners to help improve outcomes and build confidence for victims across Merseyside.”

Detective Chief Superintendent Paul Lamb, Head of Centralised Public Protection Unit, Merseyside Police said:- “I would like to welcome Lynn to her role as Independent Chair. Her experience and independent perspective will be invaluable in strengthening the way we scrutinise and learn from these cases. The panel plays a vital role in helping us improve the quality of service we provide to victim survivors through open and transparent scrutiny of cases where decisions have been made to take no further action. Working closely with partners, we can ensure victims’ voices are heard, learn from our decisions and continue to strengthen our response to violence against women and girls. Ultimately, this work will help build confidence among victims and communities in how we investigate these offences and provide support.”

The panel will meet quarterly throughout the year, providing ongoing independent scrutiny of cases and helping to drive improvements in investigations, victim care and partnership working.

Its work will directly support the delivery of Merseyside’s Violence Against Women and Girls strategy, which focuses on preventing harm, protecting victims and pursuing perpetrators, while ensuring the voices of women and girls remain at the heart of efforts to tackle these crimes.
