Winners Announced in Sefton Food Waste Vehicle Naming Competition

THIS week Sefton Council announced the winners of its vehicle naming competition to name the borough's new fleet of food waste recycling vehicles. Earlier this year, residents were invited to submit their ideas, and the response was overwhelming, with more than 200 entries received from across Sefton, including:-contributions from schoolchildren, local residents, and Council staff.  After careful consideration, a judging panel including:- the Leader of the Council, Cllr Marion Atkinson, Cabinet Member for Cleansing and Street Scene, Cllr Peter Harvey, and operational staff selected 14 winning names. Several entries proved particularly popular and were submitted by more than one participant.

The winning names, which will be displayed on the new food waste vehicles, are as follows:-

  • Bin Appetit - Terry Rytz and Julia Kerr (Sefton Residents)

  • Bin Crosby - Jason Ditchburn and Susie Eyre (Sefton Residents)

  • Binderella - Sarah Hughes and Kerry Lindsay (Sefton Residents)

  • Hungry Horace - Erin Hender (Norwood Primary School) and Jean Riding (Sefton Resident)

  • Peels on Wheels - Pauline Baker, Karen Christie, Mike Haloin and Ewa Hanson (Sefton Residents)

  • The Very Hungry Caddy Filler - Kim Brennan and Martin Woods (Sefton Residents)

  • Bingo Starr - Chris Beckinsale (Sefton Council Employee)

  • Captain Compost - Sandra Carter (Sefton Resident)

  • Eleanor Binby - Arlo Baker (Sacred Heart Catholic Academy)

  • Paddy the Caddy - Neil Hargreaves (Sefton Resident)

  • Supporting a Cleaner, Greener Sefton, Together

The newly named vehicles will play a key role in the introduction of Sefton's new food waste recycling service, helping to improve sustainability and reduce waste across the borough for years to come.

Cllr Marion Atkinson, Leader of Sefton Council
, said:- "It was fantastic to receive so many creative ideas from the local community, including contributions from schoolchildren. The imagination and enthusiasm across Sefton is wonderful to see! Congratulations to all of our winners, I will certainly be keeping a look-out for these vehicles when they come down my road as the new service begins."

Cllr Peter Harvey, Cabinet Member for Cleansing and Street Scene, added that:- "We had an overwhelming response to the competition, and I would like to thank everyone who took the time to submit an entry. Choosing just 14 winners was incredibly difficult given the creativity on display, but congratulations to those selected. These vehicles will help transform how we collect recycling in Sefton and will be part of our communities for many years to come. It's fantastic that residents, children and employees have all played a part in creating a lasting legacy."

As has been widely reported, Sefton Council, like many local authorities across the country, was unable to meet the original April 1st rollout date for the introduction of food waste collections. This delay is largely due to nationwide demand, with Councils simultaneously procuring the vehicles, equipment and materials required to meet the same implementation timeframe.

Despite participating in a joint Liverpool City Region procurement exercise and securing vehicle build slots in advance, manufacturers experienced significant challenges in meeting demand, resulting in unavoidable delays to delivery schedules.

Sefton Council will introduce food waste recycling collections again, this Winter.

In preparation, food caddies have already arrived in Sefton and are currently being stored ahead of distribution to residents.

Patrick Hurley MP joins calls for stronger Ofcom regulation of Royal Mail following damning Committee report

IN a report issued by the Commons' Business and Trade Committee, that says Ofcom has failed to change Royal Mail's:- "unacceptable" performance amid fears it is:- "not up to the job" of regulating a postal market that is growing in competition and complexity. Despite receiving Ofcom fines every year since 2022, Royal Mail continues to draw criticism from communities in Southport and beyond, with the service consistently failing to meet its own regulated targets.

From:- April 2025 to January 2026, just 74.9% of 1st Class mail was delivered the next day (18.1 percentage points below the target).  The Committee estimates that this translates into approximately 126 million 1st Class letters arriving late over the year. The Committee says Ofcom must deliver better regulation of the postal market, including:- Access mail and services delivered by Royal Mail's competitors. If it fails to do so within 6 months of this Report, the Secretary of State should consult on statutory changes:- "to ensure it is fit for the 21st Century postal market"

Rt Hon Liam Byrne MP, Chair of the Committee
, said:- "Millions of people are paying the price for a postal service that is simply not delivering. Hospital appointments missed, benefit decision notices delayed, fines arriving too late to challenge: these are not minor inconveniences, and they are the consequences of a national service failing to meet the standards the public has every right to expect. Despite years of fines and missed targets, Royal Mail's performance remains unacceptable and Ofcom has failed to drive the change that is needed at the pace that is needed. We were deeply concerned by the apparent lack of any serious investigation into whether letters are being deprioritised in favour of more profitable parcels. We recognise that the postal market has changed beyond recognition. Major logistics firms are effectively hiving off profits while relying on Royal Mail's universal service network to reach harder-to-serve parts of the country. The universal service remains 1 of Britain's great civic guarantees. But confidence in it is ebbing away, and Ofcom now has 6 months to prove it has the power and drive to regulate the 21st Century postal market."

Patrick Hurley, MP for Southport and the Northern Parishes
, said:- "The poor service being provided by Royal Mail is 1 of the issues most frequently raised with me by constituents across Southport and the Northern Parishes. People rightly expect post to arrive on time, whether it's hospital appointments, legal documents, bills or important financial information. When those deliveries are delayed, it can have serious consequences for individuals and families. I fully support the conclusions of the Committee's report and the call for stronger accountability from both Royal Mail and Ofcom. Communities like ours deserve a postal service that people can rely on. If any resident continues to experience ongoing issues with Royal Mail deliveries, I would encourage them to contact my office so we can continue raising these concerns directly."
