Liverpool's Cunard Building Heritage Tours Are Now Open

UNIQUE behind the scenes tours of 1 of Liverpool's world famous waterfront landmarks are now open for visitors who want to delve into its rich history.

The Cunard Building Heritage Tours are being held on selected days from:- June to August, offering history lovers exclusive access to the City's transatlantic past.

Visitors to the Grade II Listed building is 1 of the 3 Graces which stand proudly on the banks of the Mersey. They are offering a captivating voyage into the past, guided by experts from Liverpool City Council's Heritage team.

The 1-hour Cunard Building Heritage Tour takes visitors to areas of the waterfront landmark normally never seen by the public.

And along the way, they have the chance to hear from the shipping line's founder Samuel Cunard himself in a fascinating projection; new for 2026;– explaining why Liverpool was the ideal location for his transatlantic passenger service when it started in 1840.

The tour starts in the historic ground floor Arrivals Lounge which once welcomed passengers from across the globe, and which still boasts the architectural detail, stories and character of Liverpool's golden age of ocean travel.

It then heads deep into the atmospheric basement levels. Here, visitors can see where valuables were stored and where steerage passengers waited in huge underground rooms before embarking on their voyage.

There is also an opportunity to visit the sub-basement which was transformed into a giant air raid shelter during the Second World War.

Meanwhile weekend dates also include:- access to the upper boardrooms, giving people an additional opportunity to experience some of the building's most impressive interiors.

The original Cunard Line offices were based in Water Street before the magnificent waterfront Cunard Building was constructed.

With its design inspired by the grand palazzos of Renaissance Italy, the Portland stone-clad building was opened on:- Monday, 12 June 1916 as the new headquarters of the world-famous shipping line and played a central role in transatlantic travel, migration and maritime history.

On the heritage tour, discover how the building functioned during the height of the liner era, explore the craftsmanship that shaped its Beaux-Arts design, and hear stories of the people who worked and travelled through the Cunard Building; from seafarers and migrants to the cultural figures who helped define Liverpool's international identity.

Councillor Harry Doyle, Liverpool City Council's Cabinet Member for Health, Wellbeing and Culture, said:- "These Cunard Building tours are an incredible opportunity to get a behind-the-scenes look at one of Liverpool's most important landmarks and discover more about this vital piece of our City's history. The Three Graces form an iconic part of our world-famous skyline, and the Cunard Building has its own special story to tell."

Alan Smith, Liverpool's Head of Heritage, Preservation and Development, added:- "We're delighted to take visitors on a tour of the iconic Cunard Building. Part of the three magnificent 'graces,' the building is widely regarded as the ultimate physical monument reflecting the golden age of travel. Serving as the global headquarters of the Cunard line from 1916 to 1967, the building was designed to reflect the company's status as the absolute master of the transatlantic cruise line travel. The Cunard company, hailing from Liverpool, is credited for bringing the 'Light' into the new world."

Don't drink and drive: Minister and creators warn of drink driving dangers this World Cup season

FOOTBALL fans are reminded not to drink and drive this summer, as:- THINK! is launching a new summer campaign designed to encourage drivers to choose alcohol free alternatives when planning to drive, with the message:- "If you're planning to drive, it's best to have none."

Timed to the World Cup, a summer of major international football, the campaign combines media partnerships, creator content and stakeholder communications to place road safety messaging inside match day moments.

The campaign is further supported by sports creators:- Zac Djellab (@zacdjellab) and Ollie Thomas (@TalkCPFC) who have produced content across England fixtures.
Zac Djellab's content is filmed around England's friendly against:- Costa Rica and is published ahead of the opening tournament fixture, encouraging drivers to drink 0%. Meanwhile, Ollie Thomas captures the atmosphere of England's 1st group stage match from a live fan environment, delivering an at the moment perspective that extends the campaign into real match day settings.
The campaign is designed to reach audiences across the full football journey, from pre-match build up at home to live environments in pubs and fan zones, normalising alcohol-free choices for drivers at every stage of match day behaviour.
By combining football media, creator storytelling and stakeholder amplification, THINK! aims to embed road safety messaging into football culture at scale during 1 of the summer's biggest sporting moments.
The Minister for Local Transport Lilian Greenwood, also warns of the dangers of drink driving during the World Cup. She said:- "The Government is taking action to tackle drink driving, through our:- Road Safety Strategy, which has consulted on lowering drink driving limits. The Government has received a substantial number of responses and are considering these thoroughly before announcing next steps. We will publish a summary of responses and the Government response in due course."
Lilian Greenwood, Local Transport Minister, added:- "Drink driving ruins lives, and even small amounts of alcohol can impair judgement and increase the risk of a serious collision. Choosing to drive completely alcohol free is the safest option for everyone on our roads. This THINK! campaign is a smart and timely way to reach drivers during the World Cup, using trusted media, creators and partners to remind people of the 0% options available before they decide to drink. Our new Road Safety Strategy, the first in over a decade, will save lives by tackling the root causes of deaths on our roads. We have set an ambitious target to reduce deaths and serious injuries by:- 65% by 2035 and have consulted on multiple new measures, including:- a lower drink drive limit and a minimum learning period."
