Liverpool Veterans Charity Opens New Hub in Wirral to Meet Demand

A Liverpool charity that has helped hundreds of former servicemen and women rebuild their lives is expanding into Wirral following an increase in demand for veteran support. The Block Armed Forces Foundation, established in 2020, is opening a new support centre at:- 583 Borough Road, Birkenhead, CH42 0HD, bringing its services closer to veterans living on the other side of the Mersey. The new centre, The Block on The Wirral, opened on:- Friday, 9 October 2026 and will initially provide a walk-in service on:- Monday, Wednesday and Friday afternoons. Veterans will be able to access support including mental health and addiction services, housing assistance and signposting to specialist organisations; or simply connect with fellow veterans, supporting 1 another and networking.

An Organisation That Saves Lives... The expansion comes after veterans from Wirral have regularly travelled to The Block's established centre on:- Walton Road in Liverpool to seek help. Since being established in 2020, The Block has become a lifeline for former members of the Armed Forces struggling with the transition to civilian life. The charity supports veterans facing:- homelessness, poor mental health, addiction, financial difficulties, isolation and other complex challenges. More than 200 veterans who were homeless or at immediate risk of homelessness have been helped into safe accommodation since the organisation opened. But its approach goes beyond simply finding someone a roof over their head, combining accommodation and housing advice with:- welfare assistance, mental health support, employment guidance and referrals to specialist services. Previous cases have seen the organisation help veterans access addiction rehabilitation, secure accommodation and obtain specialist mental health and financial support. The impact has led to profound testimonials from veterans who say the organisation has helped turn their lives around; and, in some cases, saved them during moments of severe crisis.

Ran By Veterans For Veterans And Mostly Self Funded... Much of The Block's work has been achieved with extremely limited resources and the organisation has historically relied heavily on donations, volunteers and the personal commitment of those involved. Director Colin Eastaway, who served on the front line in Afghanistan and Iraq, dedicates countless hours whilst Case Manager Craig Donoghue and other staff and volunteers go far beyond any job description or contracted hours.

Colin Eastaway said veterans are already making the journey across the Mersey each week to access the organisation's support in Liverpool. He said:- "Every week veterans travel from the Wirral to Walton Road to meet with staff at The Block Armed Forces Foundation support centre. Mental health, homelessness, loneliness and addiction is responsible for harming more of our veterans than war itself. Our veterans deserve more."

A Growing Demand... The decision to expand into Wirral is particularly significant given the size of the borough's veteran community and the increase in veterans seeking support. According to Census 2021 data, Wirral's veteran population was 13,302, comprising 13,103 people living in households and 199 living in communal establishments. That sizeable community is 1 of the reasons the organisation believes veterans should be able to access dedicated assistance locally rather than having to travel into Liverpool whenever they need face to face help. Colin said:- "According to the Office for National Statistics, Wirral on Merseyside has the highest population of veterans in the Liverpool City Region. It's only right that those veterans receive the support they deserve."

An Open Door Policy For Veterans... The new Borough Road centre is intended to provide an accessible 1st point of contact for veterans who may be struggling. Initially opening for walk-ins three afternoons each week, the service will help former Armed Forces personnel with issues including:- housing, addiction and mental health, as well as connecting them with other specialist organisations where appropriate. The Block's existing Liverpool operation works with veteran-specific and specialist services including OP COURAGE, PTSD Resolution and Tom Harrison House. For someone facing homelessness, addiction or a mental health crisis, simply knowing where to turn can make an enormous difference; and the Birkenhead centre aims to provide that place on the Wirral. Even if veterans just wish to connect with others there, it's a meeting point and a place to combat loneliness and isolation.

Help Support The Cause... The expansion also means The Block needs further support. The charity is appealing to wellbeing professionals who may be able to donate some of their time and expertise to veterans. Individuals and businesses are also being encouraged to support the organisation through donations, fundraising, sponsorship and other forms of assistance. A new Crowdfunder has been set up and businesses who donate £200 can benefit from a free PR package from La Vida Liverpool.

Colin said:- "Despite the fact that we've helped so many veterans and have profound testimonials, we still receive very little funding. If it wasn't for our staff, volunteers and the support of individuals and businesses, we simply wouldn't be here. If you can volunteer time and professional services, or if you're an individual or business who can donate funds, it would be hugely appreciated and means that we can help as many veterans in Wirral as possible."

With demand continuing to grow, those contributions could help The Block reach more former servicemen and women at the point when they need support most. 6 years after the organisation was founded, its message remains straightforward: those who served their country should not have to face homelessness, addiction, loneliness or a mental health crisis alone.

New Community Police Station opens at the heart of St Helens Community Hub South

A new Community Police Station has opened its doors at Chester Lane Community Hub in St Helens, providing a visible and accessible base for Neighbourhood Policing in the heart of the community.

Merseyside Police Commissioner Emily Spurrell was joined by:- Assistant Chief Constable Karen Jaundrill and Officers from the local policing team, as well as:- St Helens South MP Marie Rimmer, and Deputy Leader of St Helens Borough Council Councillor Sharon Roughley, to officially open the new Community Police Station, located within Chester Lane Library in Clock Face.

The facility will strengthen neighbourhood policing in the area, giving Officers a central local base from which they can engage with residents, support problem solving initiatives and patrol the communities they serve.

The new station replaces the former Millersdale Community Police Station and forms part of the newly opened Community Hub South, which brings together St Helens Borough Council Services, Torus Housing, library services and a range of community partners under 1 roof.

Community Hub South was launched in:- April 2025, as part of:- St Helens Borough Council's 1 Neighbourhood Programme. Designed to improve access to local services, the hub offers flexible community spaces, support services and opportunities for residents to engage directly with organisations providing help and advice.

The hub hosts a wide range of services and activities, including:- support from organisations such as Age UK, the Deafness Resource Centre, Torus Housing, Career Connect and affordable warmth advisers, alongside library services, family support programmes and health-related drop-in sessions.

While the Community Police Station will not operate as a traditional front counter Police Station, it will provide a modern, local base for neighbourhood Officers and staff, helping to increase Police visibility and strengthen partnership working with local services. It will support community engagement activity, partnership meetings and planned policing operations. The facility includes:- dedicated office space, enabling Officers to spend more time in the communities they Police.

Merseyside Police Commissioner Emily Spurrell said:- "Neighbourhood policing works best when Officers are based within the communities they serve, building relationships, listening to residents and working alongside partners to tackle local concerns. The new Community Police Station at Chester Lane Community Hub will provide exactly that. By placing neighbourhood Officers at the heart of a busy community hub, we are making policing more visible, more accessible and better connected to the people and organisations working every day to improve local lives."

She continued:- "This fantastic facility brings together a wide range of services under one roof, creating opportunities for closer partnership working and earlier intervention when people need support. It also gives our Officers a local base from which they can spend more time out in the community, rather than travelling to and from more distant Police buildings. The opening of this Community Police Station demonstrates our continued commitment to delivering neighbourhood policing that is rooted in our communities and focused on keeping people safe. I'm delighted to see this important new resource open for the residents of Clock Face and the wider St Helens area."

Merseyside Police Chief Constable, Rob Carden said:- "The opening of a Community Police Station inside this excellent facility will help us maintain a highly visible and accessible presence in a building that is already a real asset for St Helens. It means Officers will remain in the heart of the community, able to provide reassurance to people who live and work in the area, as well as helping us gather information that helps us to prevent crime and bring offenders to justice."

Rob continued:- "The Force Strategy I introduced underlines the importance of putting our communities 1st, ensuring they are at the heart of everything we do. Following the Force restructure, St Helens now has a locally-based command teams and a dedicated town centre team. This gives local communities a policing team that knows the area and understands the issues. Locating a Community Police Station within this hub will further strengthen those relationships and make it even easier for local people to access their Police Service. Sharing the St Helens Community Hub South with key partners enables us to work more closely with them. We all want the same thing; for St Helens to be a safer and more enjoyable place to live, work and visit, and the ability to work together under 1 roof is a huge advantage as we strive to achieve that. My Officers are very much looking forward to working out of their new base, and invite anyone with concerns, information or questions to pop in and see us."

Councillor Sharon Roughley, Deputy Council Leader and Cabinet Member for Stronger Communities, said:- "We're pleased to welcome neighbourhood policing into Community Hub South, further expanding the services available, making them more accessible to residents and more responsive to local needs. The addition of this new Police facility demonstrates our commitment to partnership working as we build safe and thriving communities together."

St Helens South and Whiston MP, Marie Rimmer added:- "This is a much welcomed facility that will bring our neighbourhood Police and other community services together for the benefit of local residents."

Today's opening comes just weeks after a Community Police Station was opened in the Lauries Centre in Birkenhead. It also follows on from the opening of a brand new Police Station in Newton-le-Willows earlier this year.

These developments are all part of the Police and Crime Commissioner's 12 year strategy to transform Merseyside Police's stations and buildings to ensure Merseyside Police is fit to fight crime, now and into the future.
