A Christmas Carol Returns to St George's Hall this December

1 of Liverpool's most atmospheric Christmas traditions is returning this December, as Ginificent brings its celebrated production of Charles Dickens' A Christmas Carol back to the magnificent St George's Hall.

Running in The Great Hall from:- 11 December to 24 December 2026, a Christmas Carol is an authentic, true to the word production that takes audiences deep inside the world of Charles Dickens! Expect a truly immersive and mesmerising theatrical experience with dramatic storytelling, captivating scenes and eerie undertones; delivered by a supremely talented cast. With countless 5 star Ginificent's A Christmas Carol has been blowing audiences away for 24 years.

It's difficult to imagine a more fitting Liverpool setting for the timeless tale of Ebenezer Scrooge, Christmas spirits and the transformative power of kindness, than the iconic St. George's Hall. Audiences will once again be transported into the world of Victorian London as the vast Great Hall becomes the setting for Scrooge's extraordinary Christmas Eve.

Rather than watching the action unfold at a distance, audiences are placed at the heart of the story thanks to the production's immersive in-the-round staging, with the performance unfolding around them. Live music, lighting, effects and the grandeur of St George's Hall add intense layers to the atmosphere.

St George's Hall has a remarkable connection with Charles Dickens himself, who appeared at the Liverpool landmark during his celebrated public reading tours. Today, the historic building provides a spectacular backdrop for Ginificent's faithful adaptation, bringing together 1 of literature's greatest Christmas stories and 1 of Liverpool's most iconic buildings.

With its soaring architecture and imposing Great Hall, the venue lends itself perfectly to the rattling chains, ghostly encounters, humour and eventual warmth of Dickens' story. And judging by previous audiences, it's an experience that stays with people. "Absolutely fantastic! Gets better every year," said audience member Kerry Fisher, while Pauline Doyle described the performance as "absolutely fantastic" after finally getting the opportunity to see the production.

Merseyside actor Ken McConnell returns to don Scrooge's famous nightcap, while Liverpool actor Liam Scott narrates Dickens' tale chapter by chapter, guiding the audience through the novella as its characters and ghosts come vividly to life. The cast have now performed together for 9 years, developing and refining the production with every Christmas season and attracting many 5 star reviews.

This year's production is a particularly special 1. Ginificent is celebrating its 24th consecutive year of staging Dickens' much loved ghost story, as well as a landmark 600th performance of the production. It will also be the company's 9th year presenting the show at St George's Hall. Its combination of Dickens' original storytelling, live cinematic soundscape and atmospheric staging has helped generations of audiences rediscover the famous Christmas story.

Producer and director Clare Scott says reaching 600 performances has done nothing to diminish the company's love for the story. Clare said:- "600 performances in, this story still surprises us. Every year the cast builds on what came before, and every year Liverpool audiences bring something new with them. This production is our love letter to the City, to Dickens, and to everyone who has sat with us in the dark and left believing a little more in kindness."

Ginificent is also introducing a series of special performances designed to make this year's production accessible to an even wider audience:-

  • Dickens Day - Thursday, 17 December 2026 will see 120 tickets offered on a pay-what-you-want basis, reflecting Dickens' own commitment to social causes. Donations from those tickets will support Queenscourt Hospice, Ginificent's chosen charity partner for 2026.

  • Pensioners' Day - Friday, 18 December 2026, at:- 2.30pm, will offer discounted tickets for pensioners, carers and Go Solo patrons. Every pensioner attending will also receive a complimentary hot drink and mince pie.

  • Then, on:- 23 December 2026, Family Day will give younger theatre goers an opportunity to experience Dickens' story, with tickets for under 18s priced at just £15.

With 24 years of history behind the production, a landmark 600th performance to celebrate and 1 of Liverpool's most spectacular buildings providing the setting, this year's A Christmas Carol promises to be a particularly memorable addition to the City's festive season. For anyone who loves Dickens, live theatre or simply wants to experience a little old-fashioned Christmas magic in the heart of Liverpool, it could be the perfect way to celebrate the most wonderful time of the year.
