Prescot Celebrates Successful 'Hybrid’ Arts Festival

THE Prescot Festival went ahead with a hybrid of online and in person arts and music this year and an 18th festival is already in the works for 2022. Despite the Pandemic, organisers were able to programme 10 days of events and activities, ranging from choral services at the Town's 17th Century Parish Church to a heritage trail that saw keen walkers uncovering fascinating facts about the historic Town. In an exclusive video talk, Laura Collier and Ian Tabbron of the Shakespeare North Playhouse provided a teasing glimpse of what to expect in spring next year, when the eagerly anticipated period theatre opens its doors to the public.

"On the final weekend, Dave Loftus, was revealed as the winner of the 2021 Prescot Festival Short Story Competition. The panel judged his entry, Give, a witty, entertaining and thought provoking story, and anyone can now read it online at:- PrescotFestival.Co.UK or in the August 2021 issue of the Prescot Parish Magazine. We’re immensely grateful to the volunteers, artists and members of the community who came together to help us deliver a full programme of arts and music for the people of Prescot and beyond this year, and we await the return of bigger concerts and events with both excitement and patience as we emerge from the Pandemic. We're already busy preparing for 2022 a huge year for Prescot, with the new playhouse opening in the heart of our beautiful Town, and the 18th Annual Festival is set to take place between 17 June and 26 June 2021"
said Artistic Director Dr Robert Howard,

"The Covid19 Pandemic doesn't end on 19 July" says Sefton Council Leader

WITH significant numbers of people expressing concerns about the Government’s plans to remove all COVID restrictions from Monday 19th July, Sefton Council is stressing that people have the right to take whatever action makes them feel safe. Cllr Ian Maher, Leader of Sefton Council said:- "It is clear from people’s reaction to the Government's announcement it plans to abandon measures to protect people from COVID, from Monday, 19 July 2021, that this is causing real fears for a lot of people. While some people will want to get rid of masks straight away, others will want to continue wearing them and have every right to do so. Wearing masks have proven to protect the wearer and those people who they come into contact with from catching COVID. I know many of us are now double vaccinated and feel safer, but despite being jabbed up we can still contract the virus without feeling any ill effects and pass it on to others. This may include those who remain vulnerable to COVID, people with other medical conditions that make them susceptible to illness as well as front line health workers who are acutely aware of the virus and it effects. So, continuing to wear a mask can be seen as an act of courtesy and consideration as much as self protection."

Public transport seems to be a particular concern with reports of many saying they want to see mask wearing maintained on buses and trains. Cllr Maher continued:- "Don’t get me wrong, I’m as delighted as everyone else that we are edging back to normality, but I think we need to do so in a way that takes everyone’s safety into account and after Monday, 19 July 2021, that will mean us making those decisions to protect others. People across Sefton have made huge efforts and sacrifices to protect their friends and neighbours, their communities and people working in local business throughout the Pandemic and I'm confident they will show the same care and kindness."

Sefton Council will be flying the Remembering Srebrenica flag to mark the 26th Anniversary of the massacre

ON Sunday, 11 July 2021 will be Srebrenica Memorial Day, a time when people across the UK and Europe remember the dark days in July 1995 when thousands of Muslim men and boys were systematically murdered based on their identity. As with previous years, Sefton Council will be flying the Remembering Srebrenica flag, from Thursday, 8 July to Monday, 12 July 2021 to show the borough’s support to those affected Cllr Trish Hardy, Sefton Council's Cabinet Member for Communities and Housing, said:- "As an organisation we believe we must all remain vigilant against these forces, and take positive action to build stronger, more resilient communities. This was the worst atrocity on European soil since the 2nd World War. Remembering Srebrenica is about learning and remembering what has happened in the past, and making a commitment to work against it ever happening again. The lesson from Srebrenica is that no society is invulnerable to prejudice and intolerance." The theme for the 26th Anniversary is:- 'Rebuilding Lives,' which aims to honour the over 2 million people displaced due to genocide and ethnic cleansing in Bosnia.
