Southport's  New Line Up...

SOUTHPORT RUGBY league kicked off the season against top of the league Wigan keepers on in lasts week's season opening fixture going down to an 18-6 defeat despite a great show of strength and depth team performance.

This was a great performance. Southport were put under early pressure by a big Wigan pack who pounded Southport's line for 20 minutes, but Southport's defence held firm with some great tackling by Chris Brown and Frank Dunn.

Eventually a mistake in the Southport defence from a Wigan free kick let Wigan assume the initiative.

Southport managed to get some ball possession at last and following some barnstorming runs from Frank Dunn, and some paced running by Chris Dresher saw Kevin hall crash over in the corner for a great try hall then converted his own try to leave the score 6-6 at half time.

The second half started badly with two mistakes from Southport allowing Wigan surge ahead with two quick tries to lead 18-6, even though the game continued to flow with the flavour of end-to-end rugby throughout.

This loss may not have been the start that Southport rugby team were looking for, but with a promising show of strength from prop forward Frank Dunn and Steve Tobin, who continued to rattle the Wigan defence during most of the game. Surely, this season debut has wetted the appetites of their supporters who stand to gain most from a strong team for the following season.
