Branson brings Red
Revolution to Liverpool
Photographs by Patrick Trollope.

IT was red carpet treatment for Sir Richard Branson in Liverpool on Monday 20 October, with local jazz band, the Happy Millennium, local school children and street entertainers lining the platform to launch the first of his £11 million Pendolino trains during his visit to the European Capital of Culture. The trains have been introduced on the Liverpool to London route and will travel at speeds up to 125 mph and tilt round bends like the APT.

This is the latest stage of Virgin's 'Red Revolution' which begins the process of phasing out old trains and replacing them with state - of - the - art new trains on the Liverpool route.

Twenty-eight of the 53 Pendolinos have now been delivered and over the next few months more new trains will be introduced between Liverpool and London. Pendolinos will also be lengthened with the addition of a ninth coach to provide extra seating capacity.

From September 2004 the hourly service from Liverpool to London will take just 2 hours and 22 minutes to complete the 194 mile journey, providing passengers with much faster journeys in a superb environment with facilities to plug in laptops or mobiles and enjoy audio entertainment.

The Pendolino was named City of Liverpool by Sir Richard and the Lord Mayor of Liverpool, Cllr Ron Gould. Also present were Louise Ellman MP, Thomas O'Brien, Chief Executive of The Mersey Partnership and Mike Storey, Leader of Liverpool City Council. Mervin, The Mersey Partnership's new website icon, Miss Liverpool and Miss Merseyside completed the line-up.

Sir Richard Branson said:- "It's really great to be here in Liverpool, this new train demonstrates out commitment to Merseyside. The train will carry the Liverpool name nationally and the new website will promote the city internationally. What a win!"

The Lord Mayor of Liverpool, Cllr Ron Gould said:- "Liverpool has the longest railway history in the world. The city hosted the Rocket trails, created the world's first station and the first electrified line, all of which reflected our status as one of the world's major cities.

Now, 21st century Liverpool is a vibrant and dynamic city attracting millions of visitors every year. A quality rail service is vital to our economy and success especially as we build up to being European Capital of Culture in 2008."

As well as launching his new trains Sir Branson was also asked to set off one thousand balloons to launch the new visitliverpool web page out side the Walker Art Gallery and then turn the site on in the Empire Theatre. But it did not stop at that, as he was then wicked on an hour long tour of Liverpool on the Yellow Duck Marines' very own  Wacker Cracker 1 duck, splashing at the end into the Albert Dock.
