Southport Gets Tribal
Report and Photographs by Natasha Piscitelli

THE Tribal Gathering Weekender rolled into Southport once again last Friday night, on a mission to treat revellers to 48 hours of non-stop musical mayhem.

For those of you that were there, you will understand what I mean by saying that the place went "absolutely bonkers." For those of you that weren't, where do I begin?

Ainsdale's Pontins resort was literally filled with clubbers losing the plot on the dance floor to the finest selection of house music from the very best DJs in the world. The place was awash with a whole spectrum of music genres, from tribal house to techno, right through to progressive, breaks and funky house.

Saturday was easily the best night of the weekend with the dirtiest beats coming out of the 'Soap Bar'. The Stanton Warriors and The Plump DJs could do no wrong as the crowd went beserk to their eclectic selections of twisted breaks. When the Plumps mixed up Underworld's Born Slippy with Bumper by the Electronauts the whole place went nuts. Over in the 'Tribal Sessions' room, the US's finest, Erick Morillo, teased revellers with a chunky funky four-hour house set. Ranging from US garage right through to bouncy house, he delivered tunes that were clearly pure crowd pleasing class.

On Friday, things were slightly quieter, but still messier than messy. Jon Carter proved himself to be the king of twisted techno, mixing in the dirtiest tunes with a few little surprises, including Bob Marley's Iron Lion Zion and Plastic Dreams by Jaydee. Over in the 'Tribal Sessions' arena, tribalists couldn't get enough of DJ Sneak's set - featuring a live band, you couldn't help but be blown away.

For those needing some space to chill out, the 'Ice Bar' provided a nice little spot to fall into a bean bag and enjoy an easy collection of uplifting beats and old skool classics, including Michael Jackson's amazing Can't Stop Till You Get Enough. If you were lucky enough to bag a VIP pass, the cosy VIP bar was also a perfect place to rest those feet or pull off a few more stylish dance moves. Featuring a host of Chibuku DJs, including the amazing Phat Phil Cooper, the music was as crisp as you like.

One of the best things about Tribal was most definitely the crowd. They were far friendlier than the Southport Weekender lot and were on the case to have a good time. Many clubbers were decked out in tribal face paint and feathers, while the more hardcore were dressed in fancy dress, ranging from spoof 80's gear to cave women get-ups.
So there you have it. Another year nearly gone and another Tribal Weekender laid to rest. Let's hope next time is just as funky, chunky, breaked-up and down right messy. I'll see you there?
