Trust specialists give Warning for 'World AIDS Day'
Report with thanks to Nicky Williams of Health Start.

WITH growing numbers of people being treated for HIV and AIDS, Southport & Ormskirk Genitourinary Medicine department are supporting this year's World AIDS Day by urging local people to practice safe sex.

Shocking statistics show that five people worldwide die of AIDS every minute of every day and HIV has hit every corner of the globe.

Latest figures reveal that 49,500 adults in the UK will now have HIV, which is an increase of about 20% from between 2001-2002.

In a bid to prevent further increases in local new cases, specialists at the Trust are encouraging people to take precautions and to seek advice if they have any concerns during World Aids Day (December 1) and AIDS Awareness Week (November 29 to December 6).

The main route of transmission is by sex and in recent years, heterosexual sex accounts for the majority of new cases in the UK, although gay men have been hit particularly hard by the epidemic. Despite the very major treatment advances, a new diagnosis of HIV infection or AIDS remains a devastating blow.

Dr Mike Abbott, Consultant at the Department of Genitourinary Medicine at the Trust, said:- "It is a worrying picture throughout the country, including the North West and it's broadly the same pattern in Southport and Formby and West Lancashire. Another cause for concern is that some patients are presenting to our care late, when they are sick. The treatments for HIV are now very effective, but best started early and from the medical point of view, it's extremely important that people get tested early. Treatment prevents many of the problems, or at least puts them off, for very many years."

Dr Abbott added:- "It's not rocket science ~ most people know how STI's are caught. I also think people know that smoking cigarettes, drinking alcohol, not taking exercise, or eating too much fatty food are bad for one's health. Controlling STI's is notoriously difficult because people enjoy having sex. Furthermore, sexual behaviour is changing ~ people are having sex earlier and appear to be taking more risks.

STIs are increasing very considerably and this is now a major public health problem in the UK. STI risk is reduced by not having sex; reducing the number of sexual partners or the frequency of sexual contact; changing the nature of the sexual contact and the use of barrier methods such as the condom.
