OPERATION CHRISTMAS PRESENCE TAKES OFF TO TARGET CRIMINALS ACROSS MERSEYSIDE

MERSEYSIDE Police Air Support Unit at Woodvale will be flying through the sky's to deter criminals from targeting retail parks in the run up to Christmas.

Traditionally at this time of the year thieves step up a gear, shops are stocking up for Christmas, members of the public are buying Christmas presents and business is booming - the opportunities are just too good to miss for enterprising rogue about town.

But the message for would be thieves is clear, Christmas is a time for giving, not taking. And thanks to Operation Christmas Presence, opportunities for would-be offenders will be limited and there will be no hiding place.

Merseyside's helicopter will be visiting eleven retail parks to be an eye in the sky, looking out for offenders committing crimes in these busy areas.

Using intelligence-led policing, the helicopter will be patrolling key, vulnerable locations for crime across the county, particularly areas vulnerable to robberies and vehicle crime, in a bid to deter criminals.

And officers are asking the public to remain alert as Christmas approaches, and not to forget to carry out straightforward crime prevention measures.

Inspector Andy Adamson of Merseyside Police's Air Support Group said:- "We are running Christmas Presence as part of Operation Guardian, and the Force helicopter crews will be keeping a close eye on shopping and social centres, as well as residential properties and areas. Our flying routes have been put together using all the intelligence available to us, helping us to target and keep safe those areas which are most vulnerable to crime.

As we get closer to Christmas, and with perhaps the last minute rush for presents, we would like the public to help us by taking simple precautions. Remember to make sure your vehicle is locked, and don't leave gifts or anything else on view in your car. And don't forget to Be Streetsafe, and keep purses, wallets, mobile phones and other valuables secured as you do your shopping.

We hope that our presence in the skies will continue to help keep the people of Merseyside safe this Christmas."

Brewery Backs Christmas Anti-Drink Drive Campaign

LIVERPOOL brewery Robert Cain is supporting the city's biggest ever Christmas anti drink/drug drive campaign.

The brewery is joining Liverpool City Council, Liverpool Travel Inn, Merseyside Police, Drink and Drug Agencies, the NHS and the providers of alternative forms of transport to get home the campaign message.

Cain's have included the anti-drink drive message on the Liverpool 2008 celebration beer bottles, the first time a British brewery has done anything like this. Their 10 pubs will also have specially designed beer mats which will have contact details for other forms of transport to driving including late buses, trains and taxis.

Joint Managing Director Sudarghara Dusanj, said:- "Whether they like it or not Britain's breweries have a responsibility to promote responsible drinking.

Cains want people to enjoy all of its beers but not at the experience of someone else's safety.

Every year we hear horrible stories about tragedies at Christmas caused by people who still can't understand that drinking and driving don't mix."

Councillor Peter Millea, Executive Member for Regeneration said:- "We believe that this is the first time that a brewery and a local authority have joined forces to combat drink driving. We are delighted that Cain's are demonstrating a great sense of social responsibility by taking an active part in this campaign.

This year's campaign will highlight the fact that increasing numbers of pedestrians, particularly young women, are getting killed and injured due to excessive alcohol consumption."
