Safer Schools Partnership Goes to Downing Street
Report with thanks to Merseyside Police

CONSTABLE Mike Ward, based in Parklands School in Speke, is off to meet the Prime Minister in London this week, at a reception to mark the fifth anniversary of the Youth Justice Board.

Mike, who is based at Parklands as part of the Safer Schools Partnership, will meet with Tony and Cherie Blair on Wednesday (28 January 2004) at 10 Downing Street. He is really looking forward to his visit, and said:- "My invitation to Downing Street is an acknowledgment of the success of the Safer Schools Partnership and the work that has been taking place at the school. I think it reflects really well on Parklands, the teachers and the pupils as well as all of the connection they have with Merseyside Police."

I really enjoy my role at Parklands, it sits well within Merseyside Police's philosophy of Neighbourhood Policing. The children all know me, and hopefully through me they see the human face of policing, giving them a better understanding of the work that the police do, and how they can work with us to improve their environment."

Mike has been at the school since April 2003, and since then there has been a drop in the truancy rates, exam results have gone up, as have applications to the school. The school is based in a community centre in Speke comprising of a leisure centre, City Learning Centre, housing authority offices, a library and Liverpool City Council One Stop Shop.
