"I love my dinner"
Photographs by Patrick Trollope

WE had to run this….. With our trusty blimp hanging above the stage and our microphones at the ready we set loose on Southport’s diners on Monday night… We were asked to help out on what has been one of the funniest nights of the year so far, as bush tucker was served to the media and local firms… All in the name of Charity. Honest….

On the menu for the night were ants, tropical caterpillars (real ones) as well as candy floss, pizza, hot dogs… ice-cream and lots more…. Amazingly this if you have not guessed was an eating competition! The competition was held at Pleasureland’s Casablanca, competing were teams from the Southport Visiter, Dune FM, Champion, Southport Yates's Wine Bar, Arriva, Southport Tourism Department, Smedley Hydro and Pleasureland. All of them battled it out for first place. Yates's team of locusts took away with the trophy and a giant cuddly leopard.

I felt sorry to the Visiter photographer Rob Lovett who took part and the other media as I sat on the controls of the microphone and watched from a safe distance as the contestants scoffed on…. Well some one had to be impartial should their be any dispute... But I can say I did try the ants and I did take a way some of the delouses caterpillars, strangely I am still munching on them, honest….

Pleasureland’s Mark said:- "It was a successful night and everyone had a lot of fun. Now that records have been set they need to be broken, so it will be back again next year. I bet the teams can not wait… We have lots more bush tucker next year as they seamed to enjoyed it….."

We will let the photographs tell you the rest…..
