Cleaner Canal Paths with Poop Scoop Deal

DOG litter on our canal paths is set to be a thing of the past with the announcement of an exciting new deal between Bayer, makers of the UK’s leading dog wormer, Drontal and British Waterways.

As part of a three-year project, Bayer is sponsoring 1,000 new dog waste bins at towpath access points across the UK in a bid to help improve the cleanliness, safety and overall visitor enjoyment of the British Waterways’ 2,000-mile network of canals and navigable rivers.

Bayer’s Sabrina Stroud explained:- “Dog faeces carry the risk of toxocariasis, a disease transmitted through the eggs of dog worms and which can survive in the soil for up to four years. Human contact with the Toxocara canis worms can result in serious infections and, in the worst possible cases, blindness.”

The project has been guided by research undertaken by Encams, the charity that runs the Keep Britain Tidy campaign, which reveals one of the main reasons people don’t clear up after their dog is the lack of a convenient and safe means of waste disposal. The research also revealed that up to 16,000 people a year suffer from toxocariasis.

Stewart Sim, British Waterways’ technical director, added:- “Half the population of Britain lives within five miles of an inland waterway and each year some 4.6 million visits are made by people and their dogs to our towpaths.

Unfortunately, dog mess is consistently among the most frequent complaints made by visitors and we are hopeful that this project will encourage all dog owners to clean up after their pets and help keep the waterways special.”

PAINTING PARTY FOR CLUMBER LODGE

CLUMBER LODGE in Freshfield, near Formby, one of the many projects run by the Nugent Care Society, is getting a helping hand from two companies to improve its playground area.

Sadolin Woodcare is providing the product with which to treat furniture and fences, while Lloyds TSB is providing the ‘people power’ for an ongoing painting party, which will see more than 50 metres of fencing, 6 picnic tables and 4 large sheds given a new lease of life.

Lloyds TSB is one of the UK’s largest corporate givers. The four independent LTSB Foundations will receive £31million in 2004 to distribute to grass root charities throughout the UK.

Sadolin, who produce exterior woodstains and garden woodcare protection products, is committed to supporting communities through its ‘Sadolin Cares’ initiative, which sees the woodcare experts donating free woodstain to worthy causes.
