Search for A Star North West Heats...
Boomerang This?
Photos by Patrick Trollope

THIS week began the Search for A Star North West Heats after the tough grilling of auditions, interviews and warm-ups in which now the finals test their fortitude and to impress the prospective audience.

If last years contestants were anything to go by, then this year's competition will see sweltering heat given off and on stage at the Southport Arts Centre, was a formality.

Opening the night, Maria Telford, 14, from West Derby warmed up the show with one of her own songs that got the audience racing for the heats ahead. A respectable feat from one so young but she is indeed no stranger to the limelight after recording a session for the radio station KCR 106.7 - no wonder the audience was appeased so easily to what was about to come. She also performs at the Cavan Club in Matthew Street, Liverpool most Thursday evenings.

Settling down to the performance of the contestants, prospective wanna-bees wetted the appetites of the audience with ten performances with solo artistes and bands from across the region.

This weeks contestants were…. Kirk James 20, Gemma Edwards, 20 from West Kirby, Lucy Jackson 18 from Bootle, Amanda Mc Guinness from West Derby aged 17, Rachael Mills, 28 from Irlam, Manchester, Melissia Mushrow 17 from Blundellsands, Rebecca Polding aged 20 from Hidley in Wigan, Stephanie Web aged 16 from Liverpool, Louies and Dionne from Liverpool performing as The Passionettes, and a band called Boomerang, David Wainwright.

However after a flawless evening in only 2 will go on to the Semi Finals and hopefully progress to the North West Finals. The first to go through for 2004 are Boomerang from Liverpool who won over the night with an astounding performance coming first and the Passionettes coming second.

The next heat is set to take place on August 12 at the Southport Arts Centre at 7:00pm, which is obviously setting a precedent for the National Finals to be held in Southport later this year.   See our report next week for more information about the Nationals to be held also in Southport this year!
