Year of Faith Celebration at Liverpool John Lennon Airport

Bishop James Jones planting a tree in the Airport's Rainbow Garden of Remembrance

AS part of Liverpool's Faith in One City celebrations, The Rt Rev James Jones, Bishop of Liverpool, today opened The Rainbow Garden of Remembrance at Liverpool John Lennon Airport.

The brief ceremony was held in the company of the Deputy Lord Mayor of Liverpool, representatives from different faiths on Merseyside, invited guests and Airport staff.

The garden, which is located adjacent to the passenger terminal, is an initiative organised by the Airport's Chaplain, Nicky Lees and has been provided to give all Airport users a tranquil area for quiet reflection and where individuals can remember loved ones who may have been associated with the Airport or aviation.

Upon declaring the Garden open Robert Hough, Chairman of Liverpool John Lennon Airport invited Bishop James Jones to plant a tree to celebrate the occasion and then all guests and Airport staff present planted individual flower bulbs to help bring colour to the Garden in the Spring.

A second tree has also been planted in the garden in memory of all those who served at the Airport during the wartime period 1939 to 1945.

Robert Hough commented:- "This is the first time that the airport has been able to offer such a facility to passengers and employees. We have been working closely with Nicky to ensure the garden has been designed to appeal to passengers and employees of different faiths and we are delighted to be able to provide this small haven of reflection and tranquillity in such a fast moving environment".

Liverpool City Council Leader Mike Storey, said:- "The Garden of Remembrance will be a wonderful addition to Liverpool John Lennon Airport. It is fitting that the Airport is opening this garden to the public in our year of Faith in One City. It will provide a peaceful, tranquil space for people to remember their loved ones, or to sit and reflect."

Card Cloning Warning.
Crime Prevention Advice Issued by Merseyside Police

MERSEYSIDE Police are warning the public in Sefton to be on the look out following card cloning incidents in Southport.

The advice follows a number of incidents when members of the public have approached bank ATMs to withdraw cash. Unknown to them and the bank, offenders have fastened over the card slot an identical slot. When the card is inserted, all of the electronic data is copied and can be used to produce an identical bank card. At the same time a small lens attached to the ATM photographs the customer typing in their PIN number. The image is transferred to a person standing nearby with a camera phone.

The system enables the offenders to withdraw cash and purchase goods without the customer realising until a statement arrives.

Detectives would like to reassure the public that this is not common in Sefton however would like them to be alert when using ATMs.

Anyone who suspects that an ATM near to them has been tampered with is asked to contact Police by calling Crimestoppers on:-

0800 555 111.
