Southport FC.  Brawl of Ring
Report By Sally Devine

SOUTHPORT returned to the bread and butter of the Conference North league after a month of various cup competitions in mood for battle as tensions ran high from players.

The first goal arrived after only 8 minutes, Rogers parried a Jerome Fitzgerald shot and Neil Robinson was on hand to slot the ball home from 6 yards to make it 1-0 for the home side.

A keenly contested match in the midfield erupted into a mass confrontation during the first half with Chris Price the Southport captain being booked along with Worksop's Wilson.

The visitors first shot on goal came from Gary Townsend who fired wide from 25 yards. Terry Fearns had a penalty appeal dismissed and man of the match Kevin Lynch's free kick from the edge of the box was pushed away by Rogers in the Worksop goal.

The slender lead for the Sandgrounders was severely tested in the second half as Worksop battled hard to produce an equaliser.Cleary tested Dickinson in the Southport goal with a rasping shot as the match neared the end.
This pressure paid off for Worksop when they were awarded a free kick on the edge of the area, Farrell Kilbane fouling Townsend who stepped up to bend his shot round the wall for the equaliser.

The Sandgrounders lost two points in their fight for the title to their rivals Alfreton who now assume a five-point lead at the top of the table.
