NATIONAL MISSING PERSONS HELPLINE LAUNCHES CHRISTMAS APPEAL IN LIVERPOOL WITH BT PAYPHONES

THE National Missing Persons Helpline (NMPH), the charity dedicated to finding missing people and supporting those left behind, is launching its Christmas appeal in conjunction with BT Payphones today (December 15). Pictures of missing people will appear on special screens installed on the sides of 12 BT phone boxes around the centre of Liverpool, publicising their details to thousands of passers-by.

According to Home Office estimates, about 210,000 people are reported missing in the UK each year. NMPH receives thousands of missing persons reports every year and the charity helps to resolve 70 per cent of cases it works on. Its three confidential helplines handle more than 150,000 calls per year.

The 20-inch plasma screens will scroll images and brief details of 13 missing people from the area between December 15 and January 7. They will reach hundreds of thousands of people walking around Liverpool during the festive period with appeals for information and details of the NMPH freefone number, 0500 700 700.

The missing people appearing on the screen include:- Chantel Taylor, aged 27 from Birkenhead, who went missing from her home in March this year and has not contacted anybody since; Kevin Fasting, aged 50, from Aigburth in Liverpool, who left home for work in March 2003 and never arrived and Mark Garvey, from Bootle in Merseyside, who disappeared aged 15 in 1987 following an argument with his girlfriend.

NMPH spokesperson, Issy Cowburn, said:- "NMPH is very pleased to be working with BT Payphones to help find missing people over the festive period. This time of year is often the hardest for those with a missing loved one and if we can reunite one of these families, or even just pass on a message from the missing person to say they are safe and well, that would be fantastic."

Paul Hendron, director of BT Payphones, said:- "By using BT payphones in this innovative way we will create a highly visible campaign on the streets around Liverpool to raise awareness of missing people. NMPH provides a vital and unique service across the UK and we are delighted to support them in this venture."

The activity, which is also supported by Liverpool City Council and the IQ Group, is being run for a second year. The first took place in London last Christmas. The plasma screens were supplied by Sharp and the housing, which has replaced the glass panel on the kiosks, was installed by Eurocraft Enclosures.
