SOUTHPORT TO PLAY HOST TO BATON TWIRLERS
Report by Julia Brough, Alexander Corporate Communications

SOUTHPORT is getting reading to host a conference with a difference next week when members of a national baton twirlers association will be coming to the town.

From January 14-16 the town will welcome members of the British Isles Baton Twirling Association for the first time.

Eight troupes from all over the country will be taking part and a total of more than 275 delegates will be staying at the Prince of Wales Hotel where the Individual 2005 Championships will be staged. This year's championships is the first for Southport and organisers are already talking about the possibility of the resort becoming the venue for the Individual Championships again in 2006 as well as the Regional Championships and National Championships in the same year.

The Association is seeking Sponsorship in order to stage the National and Regional Championships in the resort as even more troupes will be represented and the larger Floral Hall venue would be required.

Lord Ronnie Fearn, Sefton's Cabinet member for Leisure and Tourism, said:- "Southport's conference business is going from strength to strength. We are delighted that the association has decided to pick the resort for its Individual Championships and is also talking about bringing other Championships here in the future."

The January Individual Championships will see members competing in five categories with different equipment:- Batons, Ribbons, Pom Poms, Flags and Maces. There will be Primary, Junior and Senior Sections and Solo, Duo, Trio and Groups entrants in the five categories.

Troupes will be competing from Leeds and Havercroft in West Yorkshire, Hornchurch in Essex, Metheringham and North Hykeham in Lincolnshire, Grimethorpe Nr.Barnsley South Yorkshire and Fazackerley in Liverpool.

Lord Fearn will present the annual awards on the Saturday and The Mayor of Sefton, Cllr. Clifford Mainey will present the Individual awards on the Sunday.

Dave Lucas, Chairman of the British Isles Baton Twirling Association (B.I.B.T.A), said:- "This is a fantastic event for the association and thanks goes to all those involved for their valuable contributions and assistance. To have Lord Fearn and The Mayor of Sefton in attendance will be greatly appreciated by all at the British Isles Baton Twirling Association. Thanks to everyone involved for their help in making it possible to stage our first ever event in Southport."

BUDDING ARTIST JOSEPH WOODS WINS NATIONAL COMPETITION

YOUNG St Helens artist Joseph Woods has brushed up on his painting skills and won a national calendar design competition with his picture 'My Sister Emily'. The competition was looking for entries from five to 16-year-olds with hearing difficulties on the theme 'These are a few of our favorite things…' The calendar has been sent to the company's key customers and they had 599 entries to represent October in the 2005 Phonak UK calendar.

Victoria Adshead, marketing manager for Phonak said:- "We are committed to celebrating the achievements and talents of hearing impaired children. The response to the competition has been fantastic, we received hundreds of entries and the standard was extremely high. Joseph should feel very proud to be one of the lucky winners to have their art published in the calendar.

We had some very interesting entries; it's fantastic to see just how creative the children have been. Popular themes include family and animals and my favourites are from the very young children."

Joseph, aged 4, not only has his picture published in the calendar but is also rewarded with a £50 voucher. St Joseph's school, St Helens Sensory Support Service, Parish CE Primary School, in St Helens will also receive £50 Forrest Book shop vouchers.
