Mobile Phone Masts

THE issue of society's growing dependence upon mobile phones versus strong reactions to the sitings of the accompanying masts had yet another local focus when a public meeting was held in Formby on Monday, 17 January, 2005, at the Park Rd Resource Centre.

Questions were invited on the possible risks to health and environment posed by radiation from mobile telephone masts to be answered by prominent speakers such as Dr Gerard Hyland and staff from the EM Radiation Research Trust.

Although this particular meeting was arranged by Debi Jones, the Conservative Parliamentary Prospective Candidate, people from all political persuasions are also involved. There appears to be a ground swell of public reaction to the presence of such masts, on health, environmental and aesthetic grounds. Recently Geoff Williams, a retired electrical engineer and chairman of SRAM (Southport Residents against Masts) and also regional director of the national campaign Mast Sanity stated that people were particularly aggrieved that the precautionary approach to sitings, after the publication of the Stewart Report in 2000, has not happened. Nor have the promised public consultations taken place. He felt that the general feeling of mast protestors is that the Government is too sympathetic towards the Telephone Companies and Mast Operators.

Guidelines imposed upon Local Planning Authorities are not helpful. The great dilemma involved is peoples' increasing expectations of efficient coverage and service for users of mobile networks.

It appears that there is a great need for more information to be made available to the public to enable people to appreciate all the aspects involved. Formby's Meeting was one attempt to meet this problem.

Green Light for new Speke Centre

A NEW district centre for Speke, including new shops and a health centre has been given the go-ahead. Morrison's supermarket were given approval by Liverpool City Council's Planning Committee in October to build a two-storey supermarket, 15 shops, health centre, petrol station and car park between Speke Boulevard and Conleach Road.

The development will replace Speke's original centre, Central Parade, and will create 450 jobs. Because of the scale of the development it had to be referred to the Government. However, they have decided not to call in the plans.

"This is great news for people living in Speke. I am only surprised that it has taken so long for Government officials to make a decision on a plan which brings immense benefits to the area and for which there was very little objection from local people.

It gives Speke not only a new high quality shopping centre but also better transport links and creates improved access to the whole of the estate.

It is a major part of the continued regeneration of Speke and Garston which shows how the regeneration process can breath new life into areas. I regard this as the icing on the cake for Speke."
said Councillor Peter Millea, Executive Member for Regeneration.

Patient Choice at the Point of GP Referral

THIS week Health Minister John Hutton commented on the National Audit Office's report called Patient Choice at the Point of GP Referral.

He said:- "We welcome this report. It confirms that providing greater choice over hospital treatment will deliver very real benefits to patients. We are pleased that the NAO, the BMA and the Royal College of GPs continue to agree with us on this.

The report also acknowledges that Primary Care Trusts and GPs are moving in the right direction to deliver choice by the end of this year. Offering the choice of four or five providers for hospital referrals to patients by December 2005 is a big challenge for the NHS. As we set out in the Department of Health document Choose and Book, published last August, this will be offered mainly through IT but also other means, such as phone booking.

We have implemented the choice IT programme in stages. First we procured the equipment, second we made sure it worked, now the challenge is to roll out the service across the NHS. That is why since the Autumn, as planned, we have intensified our efforts to engage with GPs. More than 2,500 GPs have already been involved in developing systems to support choice and booking, and this engagement will increase during this important next stage of implementation."

Letters to Editor:- "Prince Harry"

To the Editor, Southport Reporter, U.K. "Why is everyone down on Prince Harry for a harmless, costume party prank? When he gussied up like one of Rommel's men he didn't kill anyone, did he? Tony Blair and George Bush are liquidating people by the hundreds of thousands in Iraq and where's the uproar? Since the Iraq war is illegal and the Bush & Blair Comedy Team tricked both their publics into supporting it based on a lie, that puts them in the same class with Hitler, don't it? So why shouldn't Harry ape the PM by dressing up like a Nazi? Churchill condemned Hitler for invading Russia and Kofi Annan condemned AngloAmerica --- or should I say, AngloAustralAmerica -- for kicking in the door of Hussein's butcher shop. And yet the world pours opprobrium on poor Prince Harry for a harmless bit of playacting! Why, after he's done Sandhurst he'll be ready to quit play-acting and to go to Iraq and kill for the Crown for real. Then they'll give him a medal. He's just got an early start on his basic training, that's all. Funny thing, how the old Axis are all good fellows now: the Italians, Germans, and Japanese, all splendid citizens of the world. And will you just look who's taking over Hitler's role? Blimey! In my book, Prince Harry could redeem himself by telling Sandhurst to bugger off and join the Peace Movement. Maybe he could use his prestige to work up a boycott going against American products. He'd make a good salesman for Toyota or Honda, too, what with his popularity and all. Sell cars for a country that works for peace, don't need an army, and plays by the rules, Harry -- and don't sell your life for a quid less. It's Blair & Bush who got to apologize, Harry. So don't you apologize for your prank before they apologize for their massacre." Sherwood Ross, Coral Gables, Florida, USA
