Southport FC v York City FC
Report and pictures by Sally Devine
Match held on August 16 2005

SOUTHPORT played their first game at Haig Avenue last Tuesday night back in the Nationwide Conference after promotion last year.Defeat on the opening day of the season away to Dagenham and Redbridge 3-1, was followed by a torrid evening against the Minstermen of York.

The Sandgrounders will find no easy games in this league and struggled manfully to contain a committed and enthusiastic Yorkshire side. The first goal arrived on the third minute, Joe O Neill scoring from a free kick eight yards out.Southport levelled quickly when Steve Daly lashed the ball into the net from the left after a defensive error.

But York continued to press and on nineteen minutes went ahead after Mark Convery converted a centre from Danny Mansaram.A further goal before half time gave the visitors a comfortable lead to take into the dressing room, Joe O Neill again on target with a header.

The pace and experience of the opposition caused Southport to make mistakes and the defence floundered on several occasions with defenders at sixes and sevens.

Kevin Leadbettter had two chances with shots that hit the side netting and Sid Pickford spurned a good opportunity to redress the balance.Krief left the field injured and nine minutes from time York extended their lead when Joe O Neill grabbed the fourth giving him his hat trick after another defensive error proved costly.

Final result was Southport 1 York 4
