Southport fall to league leaders

LEAGUE
leaders Exeter City were the visitors to Haig Avenue last Saturday,
Southport looking for their first win in four league games.
The home side looked the most likely to break the deadlock in the
first half with some good attacking play, Baker and Daly figuring
prominently. Terry Fearns, with only the goalkeeper to beat, wasted
the opportunity by attempting a lob which sailed over the bar.
0-0 at half time Exeter emerged for the second half and immediately
stepped up a gear. In a disastrous spell of 9 minutes Southport
found themselves 0-3 in arrears. Exeters first goal came courtesy of
a mistake by Krief miskicking in front of goal and Farrell stroked
home the loose ball.
Worse was to follow, Farrell turned provider for lee Phillips to
slot home from close range as the Southport defence were caught
napping. The Sandgrounders were all at sea with the onslaught and
Exeter wrapped the game up with a 3rd goal on 53 minutes, Fitzhenry
failing to clear and Farrell scoring his second of the afternoon.
Southport are next at home on October 1st v Cambridge.
