Letter to editor:- "Deaf Awareness Week 2006"

"Dear Editor,  Readers might be interested to know that Deaf Awareness Week is taking place from 1 May to 7 May.

During the week, RNID, the national charity representing the 1 in 7 people in the UK who are deaf or hard of hearing, will be raising awareness of the many different ways deafness and hearing loss affect people’s lives.

As part of Deaf Awareness Week I would also like to invite you to join the thousands of people across the country expected to take part in Britain’s Biggest Sound Check on Wednesday 3 May. We are challenging people everywhere to call RNID’s special telephone hearing check on 0845 600 5555. We aim to set the record for the largest number of people to check their hearing on any one day, the target is 100,000.

So, if you think you or anyone you know might have some hearing loss, why not take the five-minute check. Taking this first step could improve your life for the better.

For further information on deafness and hearing loss and Britain’s Biggest Sound Check, please contact RNID’s information line by telephone: 0808 808 0123, textphone: 0808 808 9000 or visit www.rnid.org.uk."
Dr John Low, Chief Executive of RNID

Watch out for bogus lottery

A LOTTERY scam is operating in Warrington and residents are being warned by the Council's Trading Standards not to be caught out.

Trading Standards has received calls from residents who have received mailings stating that they have won the Spanish Lottery. In order to claim their prize, however, recipients are asked to pay a fee or give their bank account details and no prize is ever forthcoming.

According to the Office of Fair Trading, this bogus lottery is now Britain's number one con trick and those who have fallen for the con have lost as much as £25,000.

Trading Standards is advising people not to enter any foreign sweepstake or lottery that asks for money in advance or for your bank details. Be suspicious, if it looks too good to be true, it probably is.

If you are unsure about a mailing you have received or for more information, contact Trading Standards for advice on 01925 442678.

Hospital Shop donates theatre equipment

PROFITS made in the hospital shop at Ormskirk & District General Hospital have been used to buy a diathermy machine that will be used in the operating theatres at the hospital. The machine, worth around £18,500, which is used for cauterising blood vessels during surgery, will be presented by Audrey Stuart and is the most expensive piece of equipment donated by the shop to date. The donation will be made on Thursday 20 April at 9.45am.

Audrey first became involved in the Hospital Shop nearly 20 years ago when it consisted of a trolley service on one of the corridors for about an hour a day. It is now open 7 days a week and Audrey works on average 5 of those. In addition she manages the other 50 or so volunteers, travels to wholesalers and looks after the books - all on a voluntary basis. Since his retirement, Audrey's husband Ron also now helps out in the shop.

Gill Davies, Theatre Manager, who will be accepting the machine on behalf of the Trust, said:- "We are grateful to everyone who uses the shop at the hospital, as their money has been used to buy this equipment. It is also an incredible testament to the amazing amount of time and effort Audrey puts into the shop."
