Spirit of Merseyside Awards 2006 winners
Photographs and report thanks to Winter Marketing.

THE names of Merseyside¹s most committed community groups and companies have been unveiled.

The winners and runners up in this year¹s Spirit of Merseyside Awards were announced earlier this week at a glittering awards evening at Liverpool Crowne Plaza.

The Spirit of Merseyside Awards recognise the efforts of community groups, companies and individuals in bringing lasting improvements to the sub-region.

Voluntary organisations and companies from across Merseyside were represented at the event, compered by BBC Radio Merseyside DJ and comedian Willie Miller.

In their first year, the Spirit of Merseyside Awards have been launched with the backing of Cherie Booth QC to reward the remarkable achievements of those working to create hope and opportunity in their neighbourhoods.

This year¹s awards were organised by the Community Foundation for Merseyside, the sub-region¹s biggest grant-making organisation, with support from Barclays Bank, JST Lawyers, Medicash, David McLean, Merseyside Fire and Rescue Service and de Winter PR and Marketing.

Dave Roberts, Community Foundation Executive Director, said:- "These awards have been the first opportunity of its kind to celebrate the tireless efforts of groups, individuals and companies who are bringing lasting improvements to the quality of life of thousands of people in our sub-region.

All this year¹s nominees, whether winners or runners up, have worked tirelessly behind the scenes to make dramatic and positive changes in their communities.

The Community Foundation is delighted to be able to reward these efforts."

Cherie Booth QC, Community Foundation patron, added:- "There are more than 4,000 community and voluntary groups across Merseyside and the surrounding areas who have used the invaluable funding the Community Foundation provides to make change happen in their neighbourhoods.

They have used their enthusiasm, imagination and dedication to launch a spectacular range of initiatives, which have made a real difference to people¹s lives.

As patron of the Community Foundation for Merseyside I am proud to be part of such achievements and look forward to the awards becoming an annual event that celebrates the passion and commitment of the people and communities of Merseyside."
