Birkdale 1 West Tower 5
Following a comprehensive victory over Birkdale in the Tom Galvin
Cup at the beginning of the month, West Tower were perhaps expecting
more of the same in this league fixture. However, despite totally
dominating the game from start to finish, it was never going to be
as convincing as the previous fixture, thanks to Birkdale’s
well-drilled use of the offside trap, which West Tower never got to
grips with. Early goals from Ellis Appleton and Bradley Sherwood
flattered to deceive and the remainder of the 1st half was reduced
to a series of frustrating free kicks against the West Tower
forwards, with the West Tower defence never troubled.
Any hope that
Birkdale may have had about having weathered the storm, were swiftly
shattered almost immediately after the restart, as Xander Twist
scored the third, and effectively killed the game. From then on it
was about containment and keeping the score down. Will Shields and
John Haig completed the scoring for West Tower, and though Birkdale
scored a consolation, even that required a wicked deflection off the
wall from a free kick to beat keeper Conner Monaghan.

Southport 3 Rainford 0
Southport played in their new strip of navy and sky blue and in need
of the win to push them into contention to challenge for a top spot
in the league. However they met a very strong and difficult opponent
in Rainford. The 1st half was even with both teams dominant in the
midfield area and every 50/50 ball met with solid but fair tackles.
Jack Bainbridge and Oliver Cunningham kept it tight at the back for
SFCJ and Anthony Brown never stopped competing for every ball that
came his way as he tried to break a solid Rainford back four down.
It was a matter of time before Southport got the break their
performance deserved, James Smith came on just before half time to
spearhead the SFCJ attack and the fox in the box never let his team
mates down when an effort from Brown, who hit a shot into the
Rainford box, only to find Smith lurking to deflect the shot away
from the keeper and into the net. Smith, Southport's top marksman
has hit 8 goals in his last three games and is in the best form of
his short career. Rainford had battled throughout the half but
failed to get a direct shot at the SFCJ goal that some of their
passing play deserved.
The 2nd half started
as the 1st half ended with SFCJ the more direct and effective team
and this forced numerous corners in quick succession, from one of
these corners from Sam Johnson a scramble in the Rainford area fell
to the feet of Oliver Cunningham who lashed an effort into the net
as he fell to the ground. This was just rewards for SFCJ and seemed
to take the fight out of Rainford who on at times played some good
football. Robson Baldwin and Owen Drummond had chances to extend
SFCJ's lead but were foiled by some outstanding goalkeeping by the
Rainford keeper. A long ball out of defence by Cunningham found
Smith on his own who turned the Rainford defence inside out to hit a
right foot shot past the keeper and guarantee Southport the points.
Rainford rallied late on to reply but SFCJ stood firm to give Callum
Jones in goal for SFCJ another clean sheet.
Kingsford 0 Birkdale 3
Kingsford began the game well, holding possession and putting
pressure on the Birkdale goal through corners and shots at goal, but
9 minutes into the game a goal by Hartman put Birkdale United A
ahead. Kingsford fought back with a good shot pushed over the bar by
Griffiths. As the game continued, Birkdale gained more possession
and Bolton worked hard tracking back to defend bravely. A goalmouth
scramble denied Birkdale a 2nd goal and the half-time score was 1-0
to Birkdale.
In the 2nd half
Birkdale became more dominant and Hartman scored his 2nd goal.
Rawsthorne played an influential and skillful game both in midfield
and up front. Ten minutes into the 2nd half Birkdale won a free kick
just inside the half way line. Frew took the kick which was fired
directly at the Kingsford keeper and was hit with such force, spun
out of the keepers hand into the top of the net giving Birkdale a
3-0 lead. Birkdale continued to put pressure on Kingsford with
shots from Aindow and Hartman going wide. Generally, it was a good
match played in good spirit by both sides. Player of the Match
for Birkdale United A - Greg Rawsthorne.

West Tower 9 Billinge 1
Another impressive performance from West Tower and a hatfull of
goals, despite missing their leading goal scorer. Goals came from
Adam Cleary, John Haig and Josh Davies in the 1st half and with the
return of keeper Conner Monaghan helping tighten things up at the
back, Billinge rarely looked like breaking through.
West Tower maintained
their dominance in the 2nd half, with Xander Twist scoring an
impressive 2nd half hat-trick. Billinge pulled a goal back at 4-0,
but the result was never in any doubt, and 2nd half substitutes
Ellis Appleton and Chris Clark completed the scoring.
